He spent a long part of his childhood in the café which his parents owned, where he learned work jargon and slang. At the age of 14 he signed up to the conservatoire de musique de Toulouse and to a dramatic arts institute. In the mean time, he set up his first band of 4 musicians in his own name, with whom he played at events throughout the region. In 1957, he was snapped up by Eddie Barclay who signed him on. It was in the studio of Barclay where he met his future wife, Simone Mazaltarim.
In 1958 Perret carried on touring round Parisian cabaret bars and crossed France and Africa as a part of the American group, The Platters. In Novemeber that year, a pleurisy forced him to take two years off in a sanatorium.
A master of the subtleties of the French language and French slang (he even rewrote some of Jean de La Fontaine's fables), his songs are often cheeky (for example Le zizi (The willy)) , asking questions in a seemingly naive child's tone, but has written more serious political songs, such as La bête est revenue, La petite kurde, Vert de Colère ou Lily.
On s'est aimé

Passionnément
On s'est aimé
Par tous les temps
Cet amour né
Si brutalement
S'est déchaîné
Comme un torrent
On s'est aimé
Effrontément
D'un grand amour
Si bouleversant
Si éperdu
Que tes amants
Se sont pendus
Le mois suivant
Mais à présent
Que tu es partie
La vie me pousse
Vers la sortie
On s'est aimé
Imprudemment
Sans réprimer
Nos sentiments
On s'est aimé
Si fougueusement
Ta peau fumait
Sur le ciment
Tu avais l'échine
Si frénétique
Dans les cabines
Téléphoniques
Je fus Titus
Toi Bérénice
Dans l'estafette
De la police
Mais à présent
Que tu es partie
La vie me pousse
Vers la sortie
On s'est aimé
Avec la rage
Sur les glaciers
Sous les orages
Aux îles Marquises
En train de banlieue
En pleine église
Sur ton prie-Dieu
On s'est aimé
Tyranniquement
Tu aimais pas Lise
J'aimais pas Jean
On s'est aimé
Fallacieusement
Je baisais Lise
Tu sautais Jean
{au Refrain}
On s'est aimé
En se dupant
On a semé
Du mauvais vent
Je t'ai aimée
Vraiment pourtant
Comme Roméo
Comme Tristan
Mais à présent
Que tu es partie
La vie me pousse
Vers la sortie
Moi, j'ai Esther
Toi, tu as Armand
Et l'on s'emmerde
Copieusement
Mais j'ai soudain
Ma p'tite idée
Tout pourrait bien
Recommencer
J'étrangle Esther
Tu flingues Armand
On remet le couvert
Tout comme avant
J'étrangle Esther
Tu flingues Armand
On s' fait la paire
Et vive le vent!
The song "On s'est aimé" by Pierre Perret is a melancholic tale of a past love that was intense and passionate to the point of obsession. The song is an ode to the memory of a relationship that was wild and fervent and undeniably destructive. The lyrics paint a picture of a love affair that was all-consuming, where two people let go of their inhibitions and let their passion run free.
The first verse sets the tone of the song, describing the passion that the couple had for each other. They loved each other passionately, in all weather conditions. The love they had for each other was born suddenly and violently, like a storm raging in the night. The intensity of their love was compared to the force of a raging torrent.
The second verse talks about the consequences of their love. The obsession was so consuming that their previous lovers took their own lives the following month. The third verse talks about the aftermath of the relationship. Now that the lover has left, the singer feels lost and pushed toward the exit.
The song continues to describe the nature of their relationship, touching upon their erotic and sexual behaviours in the cabines téléphoniques and the police cars. They went to the extremities of their passion, from glaciers to prie-dieu, from train de banlieue to îles Marquises.
Throughout the song, there is a sense of regret, but also a longing for the passion they once had. Towards the end, the singer reveals his plan to repeat the cycle and get back to the same point again with his previous lover, even if it meant getting rid of their current partners.
