Ryutaro and Tadashi wanted to combine two words to form the band name; something artificial and something natural. After trying a few combinations, they decided on ‘Plastic Tree’. Formerly, there were rumours floating around the web about the band’s name coming from Fake Plastic Trees but this was always disputed due to timing inconsistencies.
In the beginning, Plastic Tree were influenced greatly by The Cure. There was also a large britrock influence. Plastic Tree played a mix of indie rock, punk, and heavier grunge, characterized by Ryutaro’s generic Visual Kei voice and gloomy lyrics. They went through a period where they played more pop-rock and radio-style rock music, although they have recently returned from lighter music to their original roots.
In July 2006, Plastic Tree embarked on their first world tour that took them to Germany, France and Finland.
On the 23rd of February 2009, Sasabuchi Hiroshi left the band and was later replaced by Satou Kenken..

I love you so 確かな理想郷
I love you more 落下の一途なの
I love you always
I love you forever
I love you so 刹那な理想郷
I love you more 接触一瞬なの
I love you always
I love you forever
I love you so 不確かな理想郷
You hate me?
The lyrics of Plastic Tree's song "アイラヴュー・ソー" evoke a sense of emptiness, confusion, and disillusionment in the context of the bustling city of Tokyo. The opening lines describe a ghostly figure crying in a prose-like manner, perhaps symbolizing a sense of isolation or detachment from reality. Sleeping under a mercury lamp, the singer experiences dreams of extreme cold, hinting at a surreal and detached state of mind. The casual farewell and the question of who is drifting away further emphasize a feeling of uncertainty and distance in relationships.
As the lyrics progress, the mood shifts to a noisy and chaotic imagination within the city, where the ghostly presence of Tokyo is felt. The mention of vacuum tubes and loud dreams suggests a distorted, almost surreal perception of reality. References to warped space, disappearing gravity, and overwhelming emotions reflect a state of confusion and overload, leading to disillusionment. The repetition of "I love you" phrases with contrasting sentiments like "forever" and "falling apart" conveys a sense of instability and fragmentation in love and idealism.
The introspective section of the lyrics delves deeper into the theme of emptiness and uncertainty, with fragments of incomprehensible thoughts and the analogy of neon lights resembling moth illusions leading to destruction. The echoing question "虚ろ 空ろ ロー" reinforces the sense of hollowness and vacancy in the singer's experiences. The sudden shift to questioning love and potential hate in the closing lines adds a twist of rejection or abandonment, highlighting the fragility and impermanence of relationships and ideals in the ever-changing urban landscape.
Overall, the lyrics of "アイラヴュー・ソー" by Plastic Tree paint a vivid picture of a disoriented and detached individual navigating the complexities of urban life, grappling with feelings of isolation, disillusionment, and fleeting connections. The contrast between the longing for an idealized love and the harsh realities of disintegration and uncertainty creates a haunting and introspective atmosphere, capturing the emotional turmoil and existential questioning that often accompany the fast-paced and transient nature of city life.
