Career
Jurado began performing flamenco at a very young age, debuting on the big screen in 1962 with Los guerrilleros, acting alongside Manolo Escobar. She also played a main role in 1966's Proceso a una estrella and 1971's Una chica casi decente. While temporarily living in Argentina, the Spanish diva participated in a successful musical called La zapatera prodigiosa, based on Federico García Lorca's work. After teaming with composer Manuel Alejandro, Rocío Jurado became a major and beloved figure on the Latin music scene, acclaimed throughout America and Spain after releasing Muera el amor and Señora, among other hits.
Illness
In 2004, Jurado was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer for which she was treated in Houston, Texas in 2006. In April 2006, she was also treated for acute liver failure in a hospital in Madrid, Spain. On May 26, 2006, Spain's Culture Minister Carmen Calvo announced that Jurado had suffered a stroke, an assertion denied by Jurado's personal physician Dr. Domingo and by her brother and manager Amador Mohedano. She died at 5:15 in the morning on June 1st, 2006, at her home in La Moraleja, Madrid, aged 61. She is buried in her hometown, Chipiona, Cadiz, in the San José Cemetery.
La Rosa y El Viento

Mas bonita que ninguna
La blancura de la fuente
Envidiaba su blancura.
De noche, cuando la Alhambra
Se iba vistiendo de luna,
Bajaba el viento a Granada
En busca de su hermosura.
Oyendo los surtidores,
Mientras el viento gemia
De amor en los miradores.
Ay, rosa de la Alhambra,
Rosa de la moreria!
Hare lo que tu me mandes
Con tal de que seas mia.
Manda repicar campanas
Y yo las repicare,
Manda que se seque el Darro
Y no volvera a correr.
Pero por amor de Dios,
Pero por amor de Dios,
No me mandes que no te quiera
Porque eso no puedo yo.
Paso la reina una tarde
A la vera de la rosa.
Si la rosa era de nieve
La reina era mas hermosa.
Y, cortandola del tallo
Con mano de terciopelo,
En un alfiler
De plata
Se la prendio sobre el pelo.
Y por la noche en la Alhambra
Mientras la rosa moria,
Llorando en los arrayanes
El viento, triste, decia:
Ay, rosa de la Alhambra
Rosa de la moreria!
Hare lo que tu me mandes
Con tal de seas mia.
Manda repicar campanas
Y yo las repicare,
Manda que se seque el Darro
Y no volvera a correr.
Pero por amor de Dios,
Pero por amor de Dios,
No mandes que no te quiera
Porque eso no puedo yo.
The song "La Rosa y El Viento" by Rocío Jurado tells the story of a beautiful rose that grew in the Alhambra, a historic palace and fortress complex in Granada, Spain. The rose was so stunning that even the fountain envied its beauty. At night, when the Alhambra was illuminated by the moon, the wind would descend upon Granada in search of the rose. While the rose listened to the fountains, the wind would moan with desire for her in the balconies.
The song also mentions a queen who passes by the rose and cuts it off the stem, placing it delicately in her hair. The rose dies during the night, and the wind, mourning her loss, laments his love for her. The wind expresses his willingness to do anything the rose commands in order to make her his, even if it means ringing the church bells or drying up the Darro River. However, he begs her not to ask him to stop loving her because he cannot do so.
The song is rich in symbolism and themes related to love and beauty. The rose represents a beautiful woman who is sought after by the wind, a metaphor for a lover or admirer. The beauty and fragility of the rose are contrasted with the power and strength of the Alhambra, which has stood for centuries. The song also touches upon themes of unrequited love, sacrifice, and the inability to control one's emotions.
