Career
Jurado began performing flamenco at a very young age, debuting on the big screen in 1962 with Los guerrilleros, acting alongside Manolo Escobar. She also played a main role in 1966's Proceso a una estrella and 1971's Una chica casi decente. While temporarily living in Argentina, the Spanish diva participated in a successful musical called La zapatera prodigiosa, based on Federico García Lorca's work. After teaming with composer Manuel Alejandro, Rocío Jurado became a major and beloved figure on the Latin music scene, acclaimed throughout America and Spain after releasing Muera el amor and Señora, among other hits.
Illness
In 2004, Jurado was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer for which she was treated in Houston, Texas in 2006. In April 2006, she was also treated for acute liver failure in a hospital in Madrid, Spain. On May 26, 2006, Spain's Culture Minister Carmen Calvo announced that Jurado had suffered a stroke, an assertion denied by Jurado's personal physician Dr. Domingo and by her brother and manager Amador Mohedano. She died at 5:15 in the morning on June 1st, 2006, at her home in La Moraleja, Madrid, aged 61. She is buried in her hometown, Chipiona, Cadiz, in the San José Cemetery.

Clavela tu corazón...
Clavela vuela y revuela
Clavela, vela
Sin ton ni son.
Vives que vives lampando
Clavela, vela, por un queré
Sin tú, Clavela, llegarlo a vé.
Clavela vaya novela,
Clavela déjalo estar,
Quique te engaña y te encela
Porque te tiene, tiene chalá...
Y Pepe que te camela,
Tú, no lo quieres, quieres
Tú, no lo quieres, quieres pa ná.
¡Clavela!
Clavela clavo y canela
Clavela rosa de Abrí
Clavela de cantinela
Clavela que sin viví
Clavela quien tú chanelas,
Que no Clavela, Clavela
Que no te chanela a ti.
Clavela por más que duela
Tendrá Clavela Clavela...
Való pa quererlo así
Való pa quererlo así
Clavela, nieve y canela
Clavela nardo y limón
Clavela vives en vela
Clavela vela con tu pasión.
Quique te clava la espuela,
Clavela, vela de su traición...
Pepe por ti se rebela
Y está tocao de la razón.
Clavela tierna gacela
Clavela tu perdición,
Quique te la está buscando
Como un palomo, negro y ladrón,
Y Pepe mientras llora llorando,
Sus desengaños,
Sus desengaños en un rincón.
Clavela nieve y canela
Clavela nardo y limón
Clavela tras la canela
Clavela qué desazón
Clavela vaya secuela
De hiel, Clavela, ¡Clavela!
Te mueres en un rincón
Te mueres en un rincón.
The song La Clavela by Rocio Jurado is a poignant tale of love, betrayal, and heartbreak. The lyrics are rich in metaphor and imagery, and convey a deep emotional intensity. The clavela (carnation) serves as a symbol of love and passion, while the clavo (nail) represents betrayal and pain.
The opening lines, "Clavela, clavo y canela, Clavela tu corazón..." suggest a conflicted heart, torn between love and betrayal. The clavela is both flying high and falling without rhyme or reason, reflecting the confusion and turmoil that the singer is experiencing. The reference to lampando (pining away) further underscores the theme of unrequited love, as the Clavela longs for someone who she cannot have, while others try to manipulate and deceive her.
