Alone
Sarah Vaughan Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Alone, alone with a sky of romance above
Alone, alone on a night that was meant for love
There must be someone waiting
Who feels the way I do
Who ever you are, are you, are you
Alone, alone on this night that we two could share
Alone, alone with your kiss that could make me care
And when you come I'll promise to be your very own
Alone, alone with a heart meant for you alone, alone

Alone, alone with a sky of romance above
Alone, alone on a night that was meant for love
There must be someone waiting
Who feels the way I do
Who ever you are, are you, are you
Alone, alone on this night that we two could share

Alone, alone with your kiss that could make me care
And when you come I'll promise to be your very own

Overall Meaning

The song "Alone" by Sarah Vaughan is a melancholy ballad about a person feeling solitary on a romantic night. The lyrics repeat the word "alone" to emphasize the feeling of loneliness. The first stanza sets the scene by describing the romantic sky above and the night that was meant for love, but the singer is alone. The second stanza expresses hope that there is someone out there who feels the same way, waiting for companionship on this night. They plead to this unknown person, asking if they too are alone. The third stanza is a promise to this person, that they will be their very own when they come, and that the singer's heart is meant for this person alone.

This song conveys the feeling of longing for a companion on a romantic evening. It is bittersweet because the singer is alone, but there is a glimmer of hope that they won't be forever. The repetition of the word "alone" gives the song a haunting quality, and Sarah Vaughan's smooth, sultry vocals add to the emotional depth of the song.

Wow! My heart and soul have adopted this song until I am finally found by my soulmate. I do not think I ever would have discovered it if Sarah had not covered it...she is surreal. I just love her, I really do. <3

Well, because there could be no other explanation except that a higher plane of consciousness seeks to reach across realms to people or at least this one person here, I’ll comment with this. ‘Alone’ is apparently a word made up of two “other” words, that are outwardly opposites but constantly concomitant and sensationally synergistic in their consequence and meaning, to an all encompassing, universally manifest, effectively holistic degree. Only something surely special could creatively comprehend such a concept or experience a reality where it, Alone, is law and truth and life. Stay tuned.
