Napoléone
Serge Lama Lyrics

La paille au nez,
NAPOLEONE, NAPOLEONE, NAPOLEONE,
La paille au nez.
A l'école, quand j'étais gamin
Mon nom sonnait pas bien français,
J'étais la risée des copains,
Mal fringué, dans ma peau, pas bien,
J'étais bande à part et boudeur,
Je bouffais les mots des bouquins,
J'avais l'âme et la tête ailleurs.
NAPOLEONE, NAPOLEONE, NAPOLEONE,
La paille au nez,
NAPOLEONE, NAPOLEONE, NAPOLEONE,
La paille au nez.
Je m'imaginais que César,
Je m'imaginais qu'Alexandre,
Dans des conquêtes de bazar
Venaient m'inspirer dans ma chambre,
Avec mes mains derrière le dos,
J'étais frileux, j'étais fiévreux,
Je portais déjà mon chapeau.
Et j'étais déjà malheureux.
NAPOLEONE, NAPOLEONE, NAPOLEONE,
La paille au nez,
NAPOLEONE, NAPOLEONE, NAPOLEONE,
La paille au nez.
Devant le siège de Toulon,
à Lodi, comme au pont d'Arcole,
Toujours, toujours, NAPOLEON
Se rappellera qu'à l'école,
à l'école, quand j'étais gamin
Mon nom sonnait pas bien français,
J'étais la risée des copains,
Ils m'appelaient : "la paille au nez",
NAPOLEONE, NAPOLEONE, NAPOLEONE,
La paille au nez,
NAPOLEONE, NAPOLEONE, NAPOLEONE,
La paille au nez
The song "Napoléone" by Serge Lama explores themes of childhood bullying, identity, and escapism. The repeated phrase "Napoléone, la paille au nez" serves as both a taunting nickname and a symbol of the singer's alienation and social awkwardness. The lyrics suggest that as a child, the singer's name, possibly of non-French origin, made him a target of ridicule and mockery by his peers. This ostracization is represented through the derogatory nickname "la paille au nez" which translates to "straw in the nose".
The first paragraph describes the singer's experience as a young child. He explains feeling alienated, poorly dressed, and not fitting in with the other children. He describes himself as a loner, absorbed in books and daydreaming. This indicates a disconnect between the singer's imagination, represented by his tendency to get lost in words, and his actual social reality.
In the second paragraph, the singer reveals that he used to imagine himself as great historical conquerors such as Caesar and Alexander. These fantasies are depicted as a form of escapism, providing inspiration and solace in his lonely and unhappy existence. However, the repeated use of "frileux" (timid) and "malheureux" (unhappy) suggests that these dreams did not alleviate his inner sadness.
The third paragraph introduces Napoleon as a figurehead of inspiration for the singer. The lyrics indicate that the singer believes Napoleon would remember his childhood experiences of being ridiculed and excluded. By making this connection, the singer feels a sense of validation, as if even Napoleon would understand his struggle. The repeated refrain serves as a reminder of the childhood bullying and the singer's resilient spirit in the face of adversity.
Overall, "Napoléone" delves into the experiences of childhood bullying, the longing for escape through imagination, and the search for validation and understanding. The use of historical references, particularly to Napoleon, adds a layer of significance and historical context to the singer's journey towards self-acceptance.
