Spring: British band (1970's)
Spring were a Leicester-based British progressive rock band that represented the early 1970s progressive rock movement.
A one-shot band, it recorded only one album in its career, a self-titled LP released in 1971. Spring's music is notable for the use of the mellotron with three of the its five members credited with playing that instrument on the album.
Members[edit]
Spring originally consisted of Pat Moran (vocals), Ray Martinez (guitars), Kips Brown (keyboards), Pick Withers (drums) and Adrian Maloney (bass), all of whom had previously played in various local Leicester bands.
A turning point in Spring's fortunes happened after a gig in Cardiff, when the band's van broke down somewhere in the Welsh countryside, coincidentally very near where producer/engineer Kingsley Ward had recently set up Rockfield Studios. Ward would later marvel at the "coincidence of meeting a group with a broken down truck in your own home town when you have previously spent months traipsing around the country in search of talent". He was particularly intrigued by the fact that they owned a Mellotron, and "invited them down the following week for an audition with my brother Charles and myself", the outcome of which was "good enough for us to want to be involved with them". Several demo sessions followed. The band were rehearsing at Rockfield when producer Gus Dudgeon (of David Bowie and Elton John fame) dropped by to check the studio out, heard them play and expressed interest in producing them. A few months later, sessions took place at both Rockfield and London's Trident Studios, and the resulting album was released on the RCA/Neon label in 1971.
In spite of supporting Velvet Underground on a UK tour, plus Keith Christmas and The Sutherland Brothers on various dates, the band broke up in 1972 following aborted attempts at recording a second album. Two previously unreleased songs from these sessions (featuring new bassist Peter Decindis) appeared on The Laser's Edge's 1992 CD reissue of the album, along with "Fool's Gold" from the first album sessions. Moran later worked as sound engineer at Rockfield Studios, notably for Van der Graaf Generator and Robert Plant; he died in early 2011. Martinez became an in-demand session guitarist, working with the likes of Alkatraz, Michael Chapman, Gypsy, Tim Rose and Robert Plant. Pick Withers later became the drummer for Dire Straits, playing on their first four records. Kips Brown became a session musician, playing with Andy Fairweather Low and others, and was in a later band called 'Wellington'. Adrian Moloney returned to the Midlands, where he worked alongside several well-known artists and groups. A solo career as a jobbing musician and minor impresario took him all over the Midlands, and also to Tenerife for several summer seasons. He was working right up to his premature death in 2010.
Pat Moran became a notable Record Producer and worked with Lou Gramm, Robert Plant Iggy Pop, Edie Brickell and the new Bohemians as well as many others. For verification check Pat's obituary in the Guardian newspaper. On 25 May 2015 a double CD of Spring released on Esoteric Records, a part of Cherry Red Records, London. Engkau dah asyik dongak ke atas
Langit itu tinggi
Tunggul di kaki tak kau peduli
Cepat sekali
Dulu kau tak pernah pun begini
Tiada tetap pijak
Hidungmu tak mancung
Mengapa pipi pula tersorong
Pantang dah senang
Kau buat aku macam budak suruhan
Dulunya makan sepinggan oh
Kawanku kau masih berpijak di bumi
Di situ kau berdiri
Juga darahmu tetap merah macam darah aku juga
Insan yang lainnya di dunia
Bezanya rezekimu tak sama
Dengan apa yang ku ada ini
Masih susah takkan sampai
Ada perbezaan darjat kau dan aku
Bukankah aku ini sahabatmu oh
Kawanku kau masih berpijak di bumi
Di situ kau berdiri
Juga darahmu tetap merah macam darah aku juga
Insan yang lainnya di dunia
Bezanya rezekimu tak sama
Dengan apa yang ku ada ini
Masih susah takkan sampai
Ada perbezaan darjat kau dan aku
Bukankah aku ini sahabatmu
Ke manakah kau campakkan
Tali persahabatan yang kita cipta
Dulu kawan tak pernahku
Cuba menagih apa yang kau miliki
Hanya satu doaku kau kembali
Bezanya rezekimu tak sama
Dengan apa yang ku ada ini
Masih susah takkan sampai
Ada perbezaan darjat kau dan aku
Bukankah aku ini sahabatmu
The lyrics to Spring's song "Jangan Begitu" convey a sense of disappointment and frustration towards a friend who has changed and become arrogant. The first stanza reflects this change by highlighting how the friend now constantly looks up towards the sky, ignoring the people and things around them. The lyrics also suggest that the friend used to be more grounded and humble, but has now lost touch with reality.
The second stanza further explores the friend's transformation, questioning why their nose appears upturned and their cheeks protruding. This physical description symbolizes their sense of superiority and a lack of empathy towards others. The lyrics express the singer's hurt by stating that the friend treats them like a servant, highlighting how their relationship has become imbalanced and unequal.
The third and fourth stanzas touch upon the differences in wealth and status between the singer and their friend. The lyrics imply that the friend's fortunes and opportunities may be greater, while the singer is still struggling. The repetition of the phrase "bezanya rezekimu tak sama" emphasizes this disparity in material blessings. Despite the differences, the singer expresses their disappointment that the friendship seems to have been tossed aside, and they long for the friend to return.
Overall, the lyrics present a story of a friendship that has been strained due to one friend's change in attitude and disregard for others. It explores themes of humility, empathy, and the importance of maintaining strong bonds through challenging times.

Rendah di pandangan
You are viewed as inferior
Engkau dah asyik dongak ke atas
You are always looking up
Langit itu tinggi
The sky is high
Tunggul di kaki tak kau peduli
You don't care about the roots at your feet
Cepat sekali
How fast it is
Dulu kau tak pernah pun begini
You were never like this before
Tiada tetap pijak
Never stepping on something solid
Jadi mengapa di kembangkan
So why are you being elevated
Hidungmu tak mancung
Your nose is not sharp
Mengapa pipi pula tersorong
Why are your cheeks protruding
Pantang dah senang
As soon as you're comfortable
Kau buat aku macam budak suruhan
You treat me like a servant
Dulunya makan sepinggan oh
We used to eat together as equals
Kawanku kau masih berpijak di bumi
My friend, you're still grounded
Di situ kau berdiri
You stand there
Juga darahmu tetap merah macam darah aku juga
Your blood is still red like mine
Insan yang lainnya di dunia
Just like any other human in this world
Bezanya rezekimu tak sama
The difference in our fortunes
Dengan apa yang ku ada ini
Compared to what I have
Masih susah takkan sampai
It's still difficult to reach
Ada perbezaan darjat kau dan aku
There is a difference in our ranks
Bukankah aku ini sahabatmu oh
Am I not your friend, oh
Ke manakah kau campakkan
Where did you throw
Tali persahabatan yang kita cipta
The bond of friendship we created
Dulu kawan tak pernahku
I never expected a friend
Cuba menagih apa yang kau miliki
To demand what you possess
Hanya satu doaku kau kembali
My only wish is for you to come back
Bezanya rezekimu tak sama
The difference in our fortunes
Dengan apa yang ku ada ini
Compared to what I have
Masih susah takkan sampai
It's still difficult to reach
Ada perbezaan darjat kau dan aku
There is a difference in our ranks
Bukankah aku ini sahabatmu
Am I not your friend
