The Prisoner
Spring Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

The dripping taps unnerving stare
Conducting songs I′ll never share
Cross my mind
Accompaniment to a charred Kettles whine
Is a cold and real awesome sign
I still Find.

Friends aren't waiting
Contemplating
Or concerned in
My returning.

Winters frost turns my fingers white;
Fog that stirs and blurs my sight.
Shrouds the Town
The darkened shadow to whom I talk
As catacomb like streets I walk
Weigh me down.

Earths illuminated centuries
Can′t enlighten penetentiaries.

Dropping coins that seem to laugh
The morning's milk guards the Path
Shows the sign
Eight by Ten on the second floor

Fumes that creep beneath the door
End my time.

Overall Meaning

In Spring's song "The Prisoner," the lyrics paint a picture of a person who is trapped in a prison and has lost all hope of being released. The sound of the dripping taps and the charred kettle's whine become a constant companion of the prisoner, and it conducts songs that they will never share. The prisoner's thoughts are often cross their mind, leading to their feeling of isolation and loneliness, and their friends are not waiting or concerned about their return.

Winter has set in, and the frost has turned the prisoner's fingers white. The fog blurs their sight and shrouds the town, making them feel like they are in a different world. As they walk through catacomb-like streets, they feel the weight of their captivity. The shadowy figure of the town seems to be the only one who they can talk to.

Despite the years that have passed, Earth's illuminated centuries have failed to enlighten penitentiaries. The act of dropping coins and the laughter they seem to emit, the morning's milk, and the guard's path all serve as reminders that the prisoner's time is coming to an end.

Overall, the song explores the idea that being confined to a particular space can have a terrible effect on one's psyche, leading to feelings of isolation, despair, and a lack of hope. Spring masterfully illustrates this feeling, and the lyrics work exceptionally well with the melody of the song, making it a hauntingly beautiful ballad.

Bought this album in 1973 on vinyl obviously and it's been played and better played. Still got it and the sleeve is still in good condition. A truly fabulous album

Daremo Sensanome

Pat Moran not was just a great vocalist, but also a a great sound engineer. The sound of this album is impressive, as also was the albums of Van Der Graaf, which Pat managed.

I lived in West Germany when this came out and a friend had it. I wrote down the lyrics to one of the songs and still have them somewhere. For years I looked for the band thinking their name was Spirit. I don't know why I got the name wrong. Quite by chance came across this and vague familiarity I couldn't place suddenly dawned on me it could be that band. When I came to Shipwrecked Soldier I recognised the lyrics at once as the ones I'd kept all these years. Fantastic to find them at last. :)

I don't know why Spring aren't famous. They are amazing. I'm italian and I was lucky to find they, because in Italy not many people know they. I have their original "mini lp" found after many vicissitudes. I love they! P.S.: sorry for my bad english
