A crave my own demise
When I wake to when I fall asleep
I'm stuck between nothing and nothing
United states national park
Oh don't leave me here alone by the campfire
United states national park
They say life is beautiful
But what does that mean
I don't want to say anything
that might make you believe in nothing
United states national park
Oh don't leave me here alone by the campfire
United states national park
I don't wanna die alone by the campfire
United states national park
Oh don't leave me here alone by the campfire
United states national park
I don't wanna die alone by the campfire
The opening lines of The Drums's song U.S. National Park speak of a self-destructive desire that seems to lurk in the singer's subconscious. He is torn between the waking and sleeping states, feeling as though he is stuck between nothingness. The first verse suggests a sense of confusion and a lack of clarity, almost as if the singer is questioning the value of his own existence.
The chorus of the song, which is repeated several times, is where the title makes its appearance. The United States National Park, which is known for its beauty and pristine wilderness, becomes a metaphor for the singer's own state of mind. He implores someone not to leave him alone by the campfire, as if the flames are the only thing keeping the darkness at bay. It speaks to a sense of isolation and fear, both of which are universal experiences but are heightened when one is in such an awe-inspiring yet ultimately unforgiving environment.
In the second verse, the singer reflects on the idea that life is beautiful but is cautious about stating anything that might "make you believe in nothing". Here the lyrics can be interpreted as a warning against placing too much emphasis on the grandeur of nature or relying too heavily on external factors such as the beauty of a landscape to provide meaning or happiness in life. Ultimately, U.S National Park is a song that explores themes of loneliness, isolation, and the fleeting nature of human existence.
