It makes perfect sense. When you’re poor/broke, you have less money to spend which makes more things expensive. When you have much more disposable income, you have the money for the same things which make them “cheaper” even when they’re the same price.

Totally walked out on a deal, right at the end. The salesman and dealership panicked. We weren't even a block away before they called us on the phone. We went shopping for an hour. They called twice more. Managed to get a few thousand off the car and we've been happy witg it ever since.

@Jacob if referring to me, first of all let me be like Paul Harvey and tell you "the rest of the story." car dealership...and a big one had radio station there doing live remote for last day of the month midnight madness sale as they called it. they said they were open till midnight and claimed they were trying to outsell another dealership that month. I just had a truck totaled in tornado/softball hail storm and got insurance check and was taking mom out to eat. heard it advertised on radio while riding with her to restaurant and passed it on way to eat. on way home we stopped to take a look. was about 9pm then. radio station still there but was getting ready to wrap it up. test drove some new and newer used trucks. then sales guy told me about a 95 chevy c1500 around back they just took in on trade on new truck sale that afternoon sales guy claimed. hasnt been inspected. i said im a mechanic lets take it for a drive. 10 30 or so now. look it over under hood, underneath, drove it, place was on freeway exit so went couple miles down freeway and back with sales guy. he was asking $7500 on the 13 year old 135k mile 5.7l auto truck with crappy maaco repaint job. got them to offer $1000 off on 89 s10 truck i bought for $500 at auction month prior that insurance totaled and wrote me $2100 check to keep it cause hail damage from same storm. and they came down $500 on price. so $6k plus trade. was after 11pm when we 1st sat down to talk. they refused to budge and so did i. sales guy went and talked to managers... you know like movie fargo. lot of back and forth. they said they come down another $500. i held firm. they finally came to me claiming other dealership just closed and they claimed they were tied in this competition they claimed they were having. so they claimed selling me this truck would win the bet they had. so they claimed they would take my $5k plus trade offer so they could win this so called bet they had with some other dealership for the most sales that month in the last minutes of the month. so they were all scheduled to be there till midnight to begin with. and i bet they offered less than $5k on trade in truck i bought. and i bet they didnt lose money. idk if there really was a bet or they were tied or if it was a gimmick. if there was really a bet then they made up for taking a lower offer from me to win the bet....according to their claims. and now you know.... the rest of the story.

@Sgt Joe Smith that’s great bud but that’s not realistic nor should it be an expectation as that’s not how things typically work. Try working with people who waste your time wanting to get another 500 bucks off and spend days, weeks and months going back and fourth. There’s nothing better than selling that car for over MSRP and letting that cheapskate know “sorry we are all sold out sir.” If you want a fair/good deal. Be upfront, direct, be nice, don’t focus on anything but the total number and don’t waste everyone’s time by not saying what your ultimate goal is.

They were actually wrong about that. Buying a brand new car in full is almost always a waste of money. Pretty much any brand new high end car is going to depreciate very quick, so having money tied up in a depreciating asset is never a good idea. Depreciation can be used as a tax right off, but a much better option is to finance/lease the car, and then invest the money you would have spent on the car elsewhere, at a higher return rate than the interest of your loan. Ideally that way, your investment will be covering a bulk of your car payment (if not more + profit) and at the end youll have both a car and some other form of asset, rather than just a single depreciating car. The only exceptions to this rule are used cars, in which case interest rates are usually too high to justify a loan. Even regular people shouldn't be buying brand new cars in full though. Even if you don't plan on investing the money, you'll probably lose more money on depreciation than you will on the interest of a lease.

Working in the industry it always frustrates me when people say/think paying cash will get you a better deal. That's the exact opposite the dealership makes money from you financing. Why would we ever want to give that up? In fact we would be more likely to discount the cost of the vehicle if we know we can pick it up more on the back end.

I bought a new car with a known recall off the lot (parts on back order) and I knew they were, Gave the dealer my part ex then waited 3 weeks checking all places for my part ex to show up for sale. When it did I went back to ask when new car was going to be ready? They didn't know, So told them deal is off give me MY car back......Terrified look in salesman's eyes they did not have my car (I knew I had found it with another garage). Here in Chile we have a similar law to reduce tax, the diference as far as I know is what classifies as a "Comercial vehicule", which depends on the load area of your car, so you can buy one of these small cargo vans like a renault dokker and get a jegty deduction in price

Buying a new car in full is objectively a dumb financial decision. Hell, I'd argue even buying a Gucci belt or some shit is probably smarter than spending your money on a car, because you already lost more money driving off the lot in your brand new car compared to buying a Gucci belt for every day of the week.

You can take $200k and spend it all on a new S Class and lose $50k before you even get to your first oil change. Or, you can finance it, use the $200k to put down payments on several rental properties, and use the profits to cover your car payment. You're telling me "real wealth" will choose option A?

The part about “cash is king” is a total lie. Dealerships want you to finance. That’s how’s they get additional rebates and incentives to pass to you. They’d prefer you keep a loan for 84 months if possible and make every single payment. The tax write off/business purchase is legit and a pretty cool loophole. I just sold a 70k Genesis to a dude who bought it for his wife under the company name. He buys a bunch of cars that way apparently. There is many loopholes like that.

I always pay cash for depreciating items. Last spring, I bought a KRX, and got an $800 discount for financing. I tried everything I could think of to get the same discount for cash, but they wouldn't budge. They told me they got a kick back from the finance company. So, I financed, and paid it off on the first payment.

@Ninja Sushi, the only "discount" you get by paying cash is that you don't have interest on a loan. Car dealerships don't really care if the money comes out of your pocket or out of the bank's pocket. They get paid either way. In fact, they often get kickbacks from the lenders they use to continue sending more business that way. So it's often better for the dealership if you do finance. That being said, dealerships often make you choose between promotional rebates or a promotional interest rate. If you're paying cash, the interest rate doesn't matter, so you don't have to do any math to figure out that taking the rebate is the way to go.

@Abendschein, that's not true. In a lot of cases, especially on weekends, the dealer runs a credit check and determines if you will qualify for lending and they offer you a loan. Then they sign over the loan as an assignment to one of their preferred lenders during the lenders' business hours. The lender gets a chance to review your application for credit before they accept it, even if you buy a car on a late evening or a Saturday. If the banks don't want the assignment, the dealership might be stuck with it. Or they might have to assign it out to a lender and pay the lender some points because they sold the loan at too low an interest rate. If the dealership holds the loan for too long, your first payment or two might be due to the dealership rather than a bank.

@Ninja Sushi that’s just false unfortunately. It’s not 1938 anymore. Look at any major manufacturer even luxury and high end manufacturers. They all offer either a low rate or an additional rebate (at a slightly higher rate) off the sale price. You have to finance to get the additional rebates. Discount and rebate are two different things. The real way to get a good deal is to get the car discounted off MSRP (out of the dealer’s pocket) and then finance it for the additional financing rebates (rebates come from the bank) and then just pay it off right away. That is what the majority of savvy buyers do these days. The bank gives the dealership/customer additional incentives towards that car purchase (the bank is owned by the manufacturer) because the bank pockets the interest money if you make every single loan payment.

Great channel! But... your lead-in premise about "how rich people get super cars for super cheap..." doesn't really hold water. Expensive cars (or anything over valued, really) are made expressly to sell to those rich types that want prestigious items. And if prices are discounted, it ain't by much and certainly not because they're paying cash. Buying the car as a business write-off also doesn't affect the price at the dealership. Dealerships do not cut deals to cash buyers for two big reasons: 1. dealerships get paid in full on every car sold because they're not carrying the note. 2. They get paid a kickback for shopping you around to a list of "preferred" lenders. Also, modern dealership business models rely on packing the financing portion of the purchase with a half-dozen or more fleecing techniques that increase the profit margin on each sale. Cash buyers eliminate those opportunities and the only way to make up for that loss is to sell at the highest price possible. Cash buyers are the last people dealerships and sales people want. Need proof? Pull up to the sales rep porch at your local dealership, get out and ask loudly "who wants to sell me my next car for cash money?!" They will scatter like roaches. ...or you could just "research" YT for what not to do when paying cash.

I think he was addressing the tax benefits of being able to write off, let's say 60%, of the initial cost when buying a vehicle. For example: I go to my local Mercedes dealer and pay $150k for a GWagon, but I work for Microsoft and don't own a business and therefor no LLC. Now come tax season I can't write off any costs for purchasing the GWagen as it's a personal vehicle. Guy 2 also heads to his local Mercedes dealer and buys the same car but he's created an LLC for his side business that makes beer coasters(he also writes this off, but that's another story). Dude claims the GWagon is a company car and with the tax deduction writes of 60% of the cost. He's still paying the $150k like me but he's getting $85K back because it's the "company car" with tax break A BC and D. He also puts all his dough in the market and borrows against it for his spending cash. This is so he doesn't pay a much higher rate in interest for capitol gains taxes. You are 100% right about paying cash for a car. It carry the same weight as a bag of wet mice. The idea is to write off as much as legally possible to offset your gains. It's percentage rate vs percentage rate and when it comes to millions or billions 3% is a lot better than 11% just for example.

I've heard the exact same thing. It's pretty sad how the way selling a car is most profitable is by selling the debt instead of the car itself.

This makes me like dealers even less. It's stupid that we have to go through a dealer to get a car in the US. You should be able to buy direct from the manufacturer.

You can also write off multiple expenses with your “work vehicle”. Obviously if the vehicle is over 6,000 lbs you write off the first year of ownership. If you have a loan on that vehicle you can write off the interest, and you can deduct registration and insurance.
Also any maintenance (oil changes, tires, etc)
You can even deduct silly things like a car wash membership if so chose to get that.

Maybe, however, I think it may only be the luxury brands that this might work with. My son had saved the $30k to buy a Honda outright and it got us nowhere, even showing the stack of $100s to the dealer did nothing. They told us that if we want to save money, we'd need to finance. They would only take $1k off if we financed.

I drive a 2018 Miata for “free” because I use it mostly for work. Add car payment, insurance, gas, and any maintenance and multiply by the % of miles used for work purposes that month. I usually get enough to cover the car payment tax free to me. Your boss just has to be on board.

@NerdingAround a tax deduction is only valuable if you have income to offset. The tax savings is limited to the bracket you are in. If your income tax rate is say 15% then if you buy a car and could claim all of it (you probably can’t) you would spend say 10k of real money and save $1500

Technically, couldn't I write off my loss as a pass-through (cost of machines is more that I made). Couldn't I also in theory buy/register car through the LLC and benefit from this Hummer Loophole? I’m a little late to the party and I’m sure some dealer staff have already mentioned this. The first option that allows rich people to save money is actually wrong, for the most part. Actual car dealerships prefer you finance (not talking about ma and pa shops or buy here pay here’s, talking about new car dealers). Car dealers are incentivized to have customers finance and not pay cash. Each auto manufacturer (Toyota, Subaru, Honda, etc..) has its own financing institution that wants you to finance a car. There are many more reasons as to why they want you to finance but I will spare you the details. Know that if you walk into a dealership, you’re more likely to get a discount if you finance then if you pay cash. I am a finance manager at a car dealership and we are measured by how successfully our stores capture financing and leasing over cash buyers.

The section 179 is also the reason you see relatively new limo companies with brand new navigatiors and escalades. My dad was actually going to do this when he was buying his car, but he didn't want anything that big so he ended up just buying a used car and still registered it under the business. It still saves money and he hardly drives anyway since he works from home.

I take advantage of the tax deduction (not 100% tho) and I register my cars in Oregon. If you use it properly it does more good than harm. My biggest llc is registered in Oregon so getting discounts on cars can help pass that down to customers since we do alot of shipping ourself. I also helped a employee save about 5k by registering her new car partly under the llc.

Hope I’m not out of line, but can I give you a bro suggestion? When shaving your beard you should try to follow your jaw line. It’s somewhat similar to a “V” shape, to give you an easy trick if you put your head backwards, THEN you shave straight.

It’s the way to do it when you have the stubble style that we have, you only rock the neard when you go long and bushy. Stubble with the jaw line is the way to go, trust me.

Yup. Sec 179 is a deduction available to business owners (llc, sole prop., etc) but sell too early and you’ll pay back the deduction. Also, if you sell after it is fully depreciated and sell at a gain, that’s an extra tax. Long story short, keep the car in the business.

I know another tax loophole. It’s when a parent company buys another company (like Donut Media for example) in order to defer revenue and show less net income for the year, significantly reducing the tax bill. But who would ever do that?

I remember talking to a guy on one of my track days. He owns a company, and was bragging about how he swaps track day cars practically every year, using corporate write-offs and huge tax deductions so he practically paid nothing on them. Guy was a big Corvette fan, and at the time he was racing a C7 ZR1, and showed me pics of a Callaway C7 that was already in the garage waiting for mods.

The rich only gets richer, as the saying goes.
