1. the pillows (ザ・ピロウズ) are an alternative rock band from Hokkaidō, Japan, best known outside Japan for their contributions to the soundtrack of the anime series FLCL (Fooly Cooly).
They consist of 山中さわお (Sawao Yamanaka) -vocals & guitar-, 真鍋吉明 (Yoshiaki Manabe) -guitar-, 佐藤シンイチロウ (Shinichiro Sato) -drums-.
The band officially formed on September 16, 1989 as a four-man group. The fourth man and original bassist, 上田ケンジ (Kenji Ueda), left the band in 1992 to become a music producer and do solo work. Since then, 鹿島達也 (Tatsuya Kashima) and later 鈴木淳 (Jun Suzuki) have taken his place as supporting bassists. Neither Kashima nor Suzuki have been named official members out of respect for Ueda.

The lyrics to the pillows' song Spiky Seeds describe a journey of growth, evolution, and survival. The first verse starts by recognizing the stages of life: birth, growth, and graceful low-level flight. The singer emphasizes the importance of discovery, holding it tight as they move forward. However, the cells are bootleg and the partner in crime is roulette, conveying a sense of unpredictability and chance in life. The phrase "堂々巡りのアドバンテージ" translates to "a roundabout advantage," which could mean that the singer sees the challenges they face as opportunities to gain an edge.
The second verse addresses Charles Darwin, urging him to reconsider the path of evolution that has led humanity to its current state. The singer mentions "原点回帰の真っ最中," which means a return to the roots, implying that there is a need to go back to basics to move forward. The use of "曖昧さが武器のホラ吹き" describes how ambiguity can be a tool to get ahead in life. The chorus, which starts with "reborn reborn reborn reborn to spiky seeds," repeats this idea of rebirth and renewal through the metaphor of spiky seeds, which can grow into something stronger and more resilient.
Overall, the lyrics of Spiky Seeds offer a message of resilience, growth, and adaptation in the face of life's challenges. The singer recognizes the unpredictability of life but remains optimistic about the potential for growth and change.
