Heya Steph, I hope it's alright to call you that. I absolutely feel what you're trying to say here about our country, as in the USA, but I've really started to think. Was our country really that great to begin with? We point fingers at corruption, undemocratic acts, tyranny & gruesome slaughters - yet our nation does the same kinda stuff right here. It's projection on a worldwide scale. I think this country's spirit only lasted two, maybe three, generations.
The moment that this country tried to tear itself apart & resorted to conquest to prevent it from dismantling itself ... I think that's when it fell. We're always taught about what good came of the Civil War but we never hear about the true problems between the North & the South, how the politicians were gerrymandering & using mob rule, while the largely rural South was underrepresented in government.
We can't turn back the clock on what's happened & I don't think we should either, because to take away the bad that happened we'd have to take away the good. We should tear down the system & the machine to rebuild it from the foundation. The only trouble is that nobody's safe, nobody is free, nobody can organize or orchestrate the downfall of the current regime so we can build a second Republic. America was a beautiful dream.
I believed in that dream until I turned 25 & the menace of the machine was directed at some of the most patriotic people I've ever had the pleasure & honor of knowing - as well as at myself. I would be 38 before I was finally free of the terrifying harassment & persecution. I was among the lucky ones. Some of my friends, great people, didn't survive the undeserved prison term they were forced into. One was never even charged before he died behind bars - all thanks to that cursed "patriot act" which has now been codified into ordinary governmental powers.
Who would've thought that half a year after 9/11 the "emergency powers" our government gave to itself, wholly unconstitutional ones, intended to protect us from terrorists would be used to persecute the people that were the polar opposite of what those powers were supposedly for.
