In 2001, she started her singing career in the blues band "Fifty Fingers". She sang in musical groups in Angoulême, especially in a jazz quintet. She became one of the four singers of Izar-Adatz (Shooting Star), a variety band which consisted of sixteen people with whom she toured for two years, especially in the Midi-Pyrenees and the Basque Country. She worked in the studio as a chorister in Toulouse and performed with many singers including Maeso, Art Mengo, Vladimir Max, Jean-Pierre Mader and Serge Guerao.
In May 2010, French magazine Telerama announced: "Rumor has swelled in recent weeks: Zaz is a sacred voice, and she will be the revelation of the summer!". On 10 May 2010, Zaz released her first album. It contains songs written by herself ("Trop sensitible") and co-composed ("Les Passants", "Le Long de la route", "Prends garde à ta langue", "J'aime à nouveau", "Ni Oui Ni Non"). Kerredine Soltani produced the album under Play On label, and wrote and composed the hit single "Je veux". The pop singer Raphaël Haroche wrote her songs "Éblouie par la nuit", "Port Coton" and "La Fée". In 2010, she signed a contract for her tours with Caramba and publisher Sony ATV. She was invited to many TV shows (such as Taratata or Chabada) and was featured in several programs on the radio.
Zaz then toured France (Paris, La Rochelle, Montauban, Saint-Ouen, Chateauroux, Landerneau, Fécamp...), performed at the Francofolies of Montreal (Canada), Monthey (Switzerland), Brussels, Berlin, and Milan... In autumn Zaz topped the charts in Belgium, Switzerland, and Austria. Matthieu Baligand, her manager and producer at Caramba Entertainment, explained to Liberation: "We talk a lot of her right now and people are waiting her at the turn... Despite the demand, it seems preferable to do her first tour in fifty small places which will render her credible. Zaz is a popular, intuitive artist, who is familiar with music, who can sing, but doing a quality show is something else (...)." In November 2010, the debut album Zaz became double platinum, and she was awarded "Revelation Song" by the Academy Charles Cros. Zaz also won the European Border Breaker Awards: she was named the French artist most played abroad in 2010. According to a survey published by L'Internaute, Zaz was the most favorite singer of the French in the 2010 ranking.

Petite Marie
Zaz Lyrics

Parce qu'avec ta petite voix
Tes petites manies, tu as versé sur ma vie
In the song "Petite Marie," ZAZ sings about a woman whom he knows very well. He talks about her soft, gentle voice, and her little habits that have sprinkled his life with thousands of roses. He also mentions how he is fighting for her and wants to be with her even in the future, imagining a time when they can be together under a sky as beautiful as thousands of roses. It is apparent that he thinks very highly of her and cannot wait for the day they can be together again.
ZAZ describes how he came from the sky, and how the stars are talking about this woman who is loved by a musician who plays on a piece of wood. He talks about their love being bluer than the sky around them, and how he waits for her under a tile on her roof, hoping that she will come to him. He shares that he has written a ballad for her, and the wind of the cold night is echoing it back to him. He also reveals that she says life is like a ring on every finger, but it seems like his pockets are empty and his eyes fill with tears from the cold.
"Petite Marie" is a sweet, melancholic song that expresses the longing of a man waiting for his beloved. The lyrics speak about love, hope, and the desire to be together again. The gentle tone of the song and ZAZ's voice add more poignancy to the song's mood, which makes it unforgettable.

Petite Marie, je parle de toi
I speak of you, dear Petite Marie

With your small voice
Tes petites manies, tu as versé sur ma vie
Your little quirks have poured into my life
Des milliers de roses
Thousands of roses
Petite furie, je me bats pour toi
Little fury, I fight for you
So that in ten thousand years from now
We will reunite, sheltered under a sky as beautiful
Que des milliers de roses
As thousands of roses
I come from the sky and the stars among themselves
Ne parlent que de toi
Only speak of you
Of a musician who plays with his hands
Sur un morceau de bois
On a piece of wood
Of their love bluer than the sky around
Petite Marie, je t'attends transi
Dear Petite Marie, I wait for you shivering
Sous une tuile de ton toit
Under a tile of your roof

That I had written for you
Petite furie, tu dis que la vie
Little fury, you say that life
C'est une bague à chaque doigt
Is a ring on each finger
In the Florida sun, my pockets are empty
Et mes yeux pleurent de froid
And my eyes cry from the cold
Dans la pénombre de ta rue
In the shadow of your street
Petite Marie, m'entends-tu?
Dear Petite Marie, can you hear me?
I am only waiting for you to leave...
