After leaving school, he worked as a saddle-maker, but supplemented his income by singing whenever he could. At this point in his life, Dude Martin, who had a country music broadcast in San Francisco, noticed him and hired him to perform with his band. He served in the United States Navy for two years, and after leaving the service became a singer with Carmen Cavallaro's big band. In 1947 he made some recordings for Decca with Cavallaro's band, but had to leave due to a case of food poisoning. He eventually went to New York City, and made several records for King Records under the name Al Grant. He won on Arthur Godfrey's Talent Scouts radio show during this time.
Mitch Miller, who was in charge of talent at Columbia Records, noted Cernik in 1950, and he joined Columbia and got his new stage name at Miller's urging: Miller is supposed to have said, "my name is 'Mitchell' and you seem a nice 'guy', so we'll call you Guy Mitchell."
His first hit "My Heart Cries for You" was in 1951. In the 1950s and 1960s he acted in movies as well as singing. He did movies with Teresa Brewer and Rosemary Clooney. In 1957 he had his own television show.
Though he is considered an average pop singer, many of his songs have a decided rock beat to them, including "Knee Deep in the Blues", "Heartaches By the Number", "Rock-a-Billy", "The Same Old Me" and his biggest hit, "Singing the Blues", which was number one for 10 weeks in 1956.
2007 would have been Guy's 80th birthday year and to commemorate this anniversary SONYBMG(UK) are to release a new CD "The Essential Collection". A tribute site has also been launched: http://www.agreatguy.net detailing his life and career as a recording artiste.

Heartaches By the Number
Guy Mitchell Lyrics
Heartaches by the number
Troubles by the score
Everyday you love me less
Each day I love you more
Yes, I've got heartaches by the number
A love that I can't win
But the day that I stop counting
That's the day my world will end
Heartache number one was when you left me
I never knew that I could hurt this way
And heartache number two was when you come back again
You came back but never meant to stay
Yes, I've got heartaches by the number
Troubles by the score
Everyday you love me less
Each day I love you more
Yes, I've got heartaches by the number
A love that I can't win
But the day that I stop counting
That's the day my world will end
Heartache number three was when you called me
And said that you were comin' back to stay
With hopeful heart I waited for your knock on the door
I waited but you must have lost your way
Yes, I've got heartaches by the number
Troubles by the score
Everyday you love me less
Each day I love you more
Yes, I've got heartaches by the number
A love that I can't win
But the day that I stop counting
That's the day my world will end

Quicksaves By The Number
Courier Mitchell
Quicksaves by the number
Deathclaws by the score
Everyday you spare me less
Each day I hate you more
Yes I’ve got quicksaves by the number
A life that I cant live
But the day that I stop playing
Thats the day that I’ll be dead
Quicksave number one was when you saw me
I never knew that I’d get scared this way
And quicksave number two was when you slashed me again
Slashed me but you never meant to play
Yes I’ve got quicksaves by the number
Deathclaws by the score
Everyday you spare me less
Each day I hate you more
Yes I’ve got quicksaves by the number
A life that I cant live
But the day that I stop playing
Thats the day that I’ll be dead
Quicksave number three was when you grabbed me
I knew that you were out again to slay
With fearful heart I waited for your chaotic slash
I waited and eventually it came
Yes I’ve got quicksaves by the number
Deathclaws by the score
Everyday you spare me less
Each day I hate you more
Yes I’ve got quicksaves by the number
A life that I cant live
But the day that I stop playing
Thats the day that I’ll be dead

With hopeful heart I waited for your knock on my door
I waited but you must have lost your way.

@SixFootDworf That's actually a good argument, let me break it into pieces!
"The culture today is all about sex, violence, drugs and being a woke liberal... not a whole lot of cultural value or creativity anymore."
The culture nowadays does talk a lot about these three subjects, a lot more than before in fact, but I do not think that it discredits the final product just because of these central themes, there are many examples out there that deal with these themes in pretty good ways as a core part of the story (Breaking Bad is an example that comes to mind), and there is good stories that have it as a side subject (Invincible is an arguable and recent example).
"...who has seen the utter decency of the folks who are my elders..."
Of course the older generation is (currently) better than the new one from a lot of standpoints, after all, they have a time advantage. A lot of wisdom is drawn from past experiences, a precautionary tale is useful, but the memory will last longer if one experiences it by themselves, that's why old people "Can't be suprised anymore", they had their years of douchebaggery and tomfoolery, but they had to grow up eventually, everyone does.
"Once millennials become the oldest common generation is around the time we will really be screwed, because millennials have no spine or moral compass..."
Well, then let them grow one I say, they are old enough to come to their own conclussions, and maybe it's just a change by my part in scenery, but if you really think we're worse off than culturally than in 2014, then man you're one nostalgic person.
"and the generations after millennials tend to be worse"
I'm assuming you Aren't comparing the Gen Z, which is mostly composed of literal children, and that you mean once they grow they will be worse than their last generation.
This is actually a common concern, how common? Common enough to be had about 24 centuries ago, by Socrates, who complained how the youth was (and I quote) "Children are now tyrants, not the servants of their household. They no longer rise when elders enter the room. They contradict their parents, chatter before company, gobble up dainties at the table, cross their legs and tyrannize their teachers".
I'm pretty sure that Socrates thought that 20+ generations down the line, society would be an utter chaos, completely unruly, but, 20+ generations down the line, we have the current elders, people who we idolatrize for being born in a time period long before ours, that we believe is culturally richer, even without personally experiencing it ourselves.
"Millennials don't know hard work, and the generations after know it even less."
I do agree mostly that millenials don't know traditional hard work, but are more the intellectual type, with the invention of automatization, assembly lines don't have to use Ford management to achieve above average results, but they do need to have a technician readibly available, that job is mostly intellectually based.
"but my hardships pail in comparison to the guys that went to Vietnam, or Europe, or the pioneers that died to build the west"
And one could argue that theirs pale in comparison to low-tech areas in Africa, but that doesn't mean they were less heroic, or less hard (Just as it means that your hardships aren't anything minor just because something greater happened even before you were born).
The rest I do generally agree with, hard working people are incredibly kind, and I think it is because they understand bad situations better as they have experienced it themselves, still though, experience is something that is gained through time, so it's all about putting ours to good use.

I wonder if Guy Mitchell would’ve thought that over 60 years later, people would still be listening to his music.
