No Room In Frame
Death Cab for Cutie Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I don't know where to begin
There's too many things that I can't remember
As I disappeared like a trend
In the hum of the 5 in the early morning

And now I'm taking my time
Up through Coalinga through the valley
This highway lived in my mind
It takes me back to the place that made me

Was I in your way
When the cameras turned to face you?
No room in frame
For two

You cannot outrun a ghost
Speeding south bound lanes with abandon
It catches you on the coast
Or on the cliffs of the Palisades you killed the engine

And then it hovers above
Reeling bodies failing to discover
The thing they once knew as love
Raising their voices to convince one another

Was I in your way
When the cameras turned to face you?
No room in frame
For two

How can I stay
In the sun
When the rain flows
All through my veins
It's true

And I guess it's not a failure we could help
And we'll both go on to get lonely with someone else
With someone else

Was I in your way
When the cameras turned to face you?
No room in frame
For two

How can I stay
In the sun
When the rain flows
All through my veins
It's true

And I guess it's not a failure we could help
And we'll both go on to get lonely with someone else

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to "No Room In Frame" by Death Cab for Cutie are introspective and melancholic, reflecting on the aftermath of a failed relationship. The singer seems lost, unsure of where to start as they reflect on the past. They describe disappearing "like a trend," suggesting a feeling of being replaceable and forgotten. Despite this, they seem to find solace in driving through familiar territory, as the highway brings them back to the place where they grew up.

The next verse is more dark and haunting, as the singer describes being unable to escape the memory of their former relationship. They cannot outrun the "ghost" of their lost love, and they describe the way it hovers over them, reminding them of what they once had. They reflect on the absence of room in the frame, suggesting that they were crowded out of their partner's life and their love was excluded. Finally, the singer acknowledges that they cannot stay in the sunshine forever; they must face the reality that the rain (or pain) will continue to flow through their veins.

Everything in the album was about Zooey. He mentioned it in an episode of Song Exploder featuring the song El Dorado.

These new songs are so therapeutic for me. I have been a Death Cab fan for a long time and ever since I went to their concert with my ex-boyfriend, I hadn't been able to listen to their music without some pain, remembering our relationship. This new stuff is perfect for my fresh start, to give me something to look ahead with. Their music just knows how to penetrate my soul.
