Hozzy, Kamei and Fujimori were originally childhood friends, all coming from Odawara, Kanagawa. In 1999, they formed a band in called The Blue Bōzu (ザ・ブルーボーズ Za Burū Bōzu) in 1999, that was a cover band for Japanese punk band The Blue Hearts. In 2000, they changed the band's name to aobōzu (藍坊主) - the name of a mythical yōkai (Japanese folk legend ghost), however with a different kanji for ao (藍 instead of 青). In 2001, Yūichi Tanaka (a friend of Fujimoris since kindergarten) joined the band as its guitarist. The band then centred their live activities in their hometown, as well as around the Tokyo areas of Hachiōji and Shimokitazawa.
In 2002, the band produced their first self-published CD: "Michi" (道 Street). The following year, the band independently released their debut album Aobozu through Buddy Records, and had their songs featured on many punk compilation albums.
In 2004, the band's drummer Kamei left, and was replaced by a classmate of Tanakas, Takurō Watanabe, as a session drummer. The band then made their major debut under Toy's Factory, Hiroshige Blue, which reached the top 30 on the Oricon albums charts.
Since then, the band has toured exclusively, gradually gaining more fame. Their 2010 album Mizukane reached the top 10 on Oricon.

藍坊主 Lyrics

The lyrics of 藍坊主's song ガーゼ delve into themes of life, death, uncertainty, and inner struggles. The opening lines "生きて死んでゆく 僕たちはどこへゆく" reflect on the transient nature of life and the unknown destination that we are all headed towards. The mention of the stars Sirius and Canopus shining bright adds a sense of awe and wonder to the lyrics, emphasizing the profound feelings of the singer as they navigate through existence.
The imagery of "電球の光のよう" compares the singer's own brilliance to that of a light bulb, suggesting a raw and intense brightness that can feel overpowering or deceitful. The vulnerability and fragility of the persona is depicted through the metaphor of easily shattering when dropped, highlighting a sense of insecurity and precariousness in their surroundings. The sense of confinement in a dark, small space evokes feelings of isolation and introspection, where even the smallest creatures struggle to find their way.
The lines "空が0.3センチ位ずれている" introduce a surreal element, hinting at a reality slightly askew or out of alignment. The reference to struggling with old habits like reaching for a cigarette adds a layer of nostalgia and longing for familiarity, even if it comes with a stale or damp taste. The sensation of being immersed in lukewarm water mirrors a sense of stagnation or being stuck in a state of tepid comfort that offers no real escape or renewal.
The act of enjoying ramen while being overwhelmed by steam and the presence of "はなみず" (flower water) symbolizes a moment of solace and emotional release. The gentle and soothing atmosphere described in the lyrics creates a space where sadness can be diluted, if only momentarily. The repetition of "そっと そっと こぼれないように" conveys a delicate attempt to contain emotions and thoughts, yet ultimately surrendering to the inevitability of overflowing and releasing them in a sigh. The longing for more at the end hints at an ongoing search for deeper meaning, connection, or fulfillment in a world filled with fleeting moments and unspoken desires.
