But Beautiful
Bing Crosby Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Love is funny or it's sad
Or it's quit or it's mad
It's a good thing or it's bad

But beautiful
Beautiful to take a chance and if you fall, you fall
And I'm thinking I wouldn't mind at all
Love is tearful or it's gay
It's a problem or it's a play
It's heartache either way

But beautiful
And I'm thinking if you were mine
I'd never let you go
And that would be
But beautiful
I know

Love is beautiful
I know

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Bing Crosby's song 'But Beautiful' express that love can be either happy or sad, quiet or crazy, good or bad, tearful or gay, a problem or a play, and can cause heartache either way. Yet, despite these varying emotions, love remains beautiful. The lyrics suggest that it is worth taking a chance on love, even if there is a risk of falling. The singer acknowledges that if the person he loves was his, he would never let them go because they are but beautiful to him.

The song leaves the listener with a sense that love is complex, and it can be full of ups and downs, but even in its imperfections, it is worthy of admiration. The lyrics urge the listener to appreciate love for all that it is, both the happy and the sad moments. It emphasizes that love can be unpredictable and complicated, and we should embrace its beauty through it all. The song's message is that love is worth it, no matter what form it takes.

The year I was born.What a voice.

What a pleasure! Limitations -- here the musicians' strike -- so often bring out the best creativity in artists. Bravo to Bing and the arranger!

Love this song so much

@Musicradio77Network

I got the 78 today, another good example in which Bing Crosby ever sang doo-wop, or sort of. Doo-wop was started to come in which was early in the game.

@EricBrownBey

I have 78 also, love it.

Unbelievable what vocalists could accomplish once upon a time. Perfection directly to one master disc, without multiple takes, piecing together the best parts of various takes, then vocal tuning, etc.,etc. as is done with ALL recordings today. And, even after all that massaging, hardly anything new (claiming to be music) today is worth hearing. Just someone screaming unintelligible lyrics, no melody, no dynamics, and way too much percussion. I regularly hear very capable young vocalists on Pandora doing a fine job with the old songs of the 30s, 40s, 50s, but they don't get air play on AM/FM radio, so the current generation is mostly deprived of the privilege of experiencing something wonderful musically.

I never realized until now that the oversized presence of vocal groups on 1942-44 records was due to the musicians' strike.

@georgecripe4898

Of course this recording was made during the Musicians Strike (1942 to 1944) so there was no band accompaniment. This is the music of the Greatest Generation. It boosted the morale of our GI's and helped win WW2.

@nickcameron7241

This was one of Ed and Lorraine's favourite songs during WW 2
