Once and for Always
Bing Crosby Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Once and for always,
Let's have it understood,
We will be together,
Just the way we should!

Let's not wait and hope
For something more sublime,
Don't you know that always
Isn't too much time?

So, once and for always,
Let's say that it's agreed
Wishing days are over,
This is all we need!

And tonight we'll notify the stars above
That once and for always,
And no less than always,
You and I will be in love.

And tonight we'll notify the stars above
That once and for always,
And no less than always,

You and I will be in love,
We'll be in love.

This was Bing at his very best singing one of the most beautiful ballads ever created especially for him and his films by the extraordinary song writing team of Jimmy Van Heusen (real name Chester Babcock) and Johnny Burke. Bing especially loved this truly wonderful sensitive ballad so much that he sings it more than once in the 1948 Crosby classic "A Connecticut Yankee In King Arthur's Court". It's beautiful verse and chorus can also be heard throughout the movie at various times as well. Jimmy and Johnny were very loyal to Bing as writers and composers and created some of the most outstanding ballads and show tunes for Bing over several years. Jimmy was a song writing genius and marvel - able to write some of the most beautiful tunes for Bing and others, very quickly, on the spur of the moment, even if not feeling particularly well himself. And of course Johnny Burke's beautiful musical creations and accompaniment in songs is legendary. I don't believe there are any Youtube videos showing Bing actually "crooning" the song in person, to beautiful Rhonda Flemming, so you have to watch the movie itself to get that treat. The film is a lot of fun, well written, and has nice comedic and dramatic parts for Bing with William Bendix and some other very nice more lighthearted songs and music. I've watched it countless times and always enjoyed it very much. They'll never be another like Bing or a team like Jimmy and Johnny, or the wonderful people who put these great movies together for us, but at least we can all see them again and again on dvd. Thank You Bing and Company!!

A real crooner's special. Love this song and "Busy Doing Nothing" from a great old movie.

I hadn't gotten to see 'A Connecticut Yankee..." for a long time until last night. It's such a good movie, and I just love the songs in it.

Corrections to my previous comments about this outstanding ballad and its marvelous creators: Jimmy Van Heusen's real name was Edward Chester Babcock which was lovingly used in tribute as Bob Hope's character name of "Chester Babcock" in the final Bing Crosby/Bob Hope Road film "Road To Hong Kong".
Also - Jimmy Van Heusen was the famous and distinguished composer of this and many other great songs for Bing and his movies, while his both famous and outstanding lyricist was Johnny Burke. Was somewhat fatigued when I wrote my previous comment and incorrectly implied that Jimmy had been the lyricist with Johnny Burke as the musical composer. Please excuse the error.
