Rather than singing in English, as is common practice among Dutch bands, BLØF produces songs in their native Dutch, vastly contributing to the popularization of Nederpop, as the genre has been known in the Netherlands..
Besides having deeply sensitive lyrics, BLØF incorporates sounds from around the world. Their hit song Aanzoek zonder ringen (Proposal without rings) uses Japanese kodo drums in the background, while their album, Umoja, was the result of a journey around the world to capture multi-national sounds.
Critics claim that their formula for success is the way they crafted songs; they try to find the ideal balance between alternative and popular rock, poetic lyrics, and the voice of Paskal Jakobsen. This has brought BLØF the hits, awards, airplay, and (inter-)national recognition that has propelled these four musicians into the most successful Dutch-language group in recent years.
Besides success, BLØF has also had its fair share of tragedy. Drummer Chris Götte, who replaced Henk Tjoonk in 1997, died in a motor crash on March 17th, 2001. When the news got out, the Bløf website was filled with condolences from fans and friends. In June, the band released a memorial album called Oog In Oog (Eye to eye). The revenue for the album was donated to War Child. Norman Bonink (who came from Frank Boeijen Groep) joined the band that same year and continues to be their drummer today.

The song "Donker Hart" by Bløf speaks about a person who finds themselves in the midst of a circle of people who are expecting something great from them. As these people cheer them on, this person starts to realize that they are not performing for anyone, not even for themselves. They feel like they are already past the point of living a life with meaning, questioning what the point of it all is. The chorus repeats that even though this person has a dark heart and often feels confused, this does not mean that everything is meaningless or over. The song gives a message of hope that things can still change and there is more to life than meets the eye.
The lyrics of "Donker Hart" are very introspective, and the song touches upon several themes such as identity, purpose, and life meaning. Bløf's lead singer, Paskal Jakobsen, says that he wrote it during a difficult time in his life when he was not sure which direction to take next. Echt een heerlijk nummer. Lukt het niet om eens alles positief in te zien, dan zet ik een nummer van Bløf lekker hard. Voel met meteen weer heerlijk en vol energie. Ze zijn echt geweldig.

Wat ik zo goed vind aan Bløf is dat hun songteksten zo ontzettend realistisch zijn. Iedereen kan zich wel in 1 van hun nummers herkennen! Daarnaast is de muziek gewoon altijd goed!
