A throwback to the flower power era, '60s revivalists Brigitte are a French female duo combining lounge-pop, retro folk, and French cabaret to produce an authentic hippie-chic sound. Named in honor of several of the decade's icons (Bardot, Fontaine, Lahaie), Aurelie Maggiori, who had previously recorded under the name of Mayane Delem, and Sylvie Hoarau, formerly the lead vocalist in Parisian rock band Vendetta, formed their duo in 2008. After recording a cover version of Michel Jonasz's "Les Vacances au Bord de la Mer" for Delem's former bandmate Benoit Petre's film Thelma Louise et Chantal, the pair signed to Wagram Records and released an EP, Battez-Vous, which featured a unique take on Suprême NTM's '90s hip-hop anthem "Ma Benz." Co-written with Franco-Lebanese singer/songwriter Camille Bazbaz and French troubadour Albin de la Simone, their debut album, Et Vous, Tu M'aimes?, was released in 2011. ~ Jon O'Brien, Rovi
Battez-vous

Maintenant battez-vous
Soyez gangsters, soyez voyous
Maintenant battez-vous
Toi mon tout, mon loubard
Tu serais mon lascar superstar
J'ai tellement besoin d'amour
Sortez les dollars et les bijoux
Mettez-vous à genoux
Dans la Jaguar, dans la gadoue
Mettez-vous à genoux
Toi mon tout, mon loubard
Tu serais mon lascar superstar
J'ai tellement besoin d'amour
De tes bras, de ta voix de velours
J'ai tellement besoin d'amour
Tu ferais de moi ta belle de jour
Oh, besoin d'amour
Je rêve d'un king de kidnapping
De quitter mon pauvre living
Je veux du swing et des bling-bling
Et que le meilleur gagne sur le ring
Toi mon tout, mon loubard
Tu serais mon lascar superstar
Et moi j'ai si peur dans le noir
J'ai tellement besoin d'amour
De tes bras, de ta voix de velours
J'ai tellement besoin d'amour
Tu ferais de moi ta belle de jour
J'ai tellement besoin d'amour
Et maintenant, battez-vous
Et maintenant, battez-vous
Et maintenant, battez-vous
Et maintenant, battez-vous
Et maintenant, battez-vous
Et maintenant, battez-vous
Et maintenant, battez-vous
Et maintenant, battez-vous
Et maintenant, battez-vous
Et maintenant, battez-vous
Et maintenant, battez-vous
Et maintenant, battez-vous
The song "Battez-vous" by French singer Brigitte is a unique mix of different genres, with elements of pop, rock, and hip-hop music. The lyrics describe the singer's desires for love and luxury and draw on imagery of gangsters and violence to create a fantasy world. The recurring phrase "Maintenant battez-vous" (Now fight) adds a sense of urgency to the lyrics, emphasizing the high stakes of the singer's dreams.
The opening lines - "Faites-vous la guerre pour me faire la cour / Maintenant battez-vous" - can be translated as "Fight for my love / Now fight." The singer is asking her suitors to fight for her affection, using violent imagery to create a sense of drama and excitement. The lines "Toi mon tout, mon loubard / Tu serais mon lascar superstar" (You, my everything, my thug / You would be my superstar thug) reinforce this theme, as the singer is drawn to someone who embodies the "bad boy" persona.
The chorus, with its repeated refrain of "J'ai tellement besoin d'amour" (I need so much love), is the emotional core of the song. The singer's desire for love and luxury is expressed through her fantasies of being kidnapped by a king and living a life of glamour and extravagance.
Overall, "Battez-vous" is a fascinating exploration of desire, fantasy, and power, with a unique blend of musical styles and a memorable, catchy chorus.
