Béatrice has played the piano since the age of three, which was initiated by her mother, a professional pianist. She later played as a keyboardist in the post-hardcore band December Strikes First when she was 15 years old. In March 2007, after five years of music education, she started composing her own songs.
After a brief stint as keyboardist for Bonjour Brumaire, a French-Canadian Indie Rock/Indie Pop band, she released her solo debut album Cœur de pirate in 2008 on the Québécois independent record label Grosse Boîte. The album found much critical acclaim and was subsequently nominated for Francophone Album of the Year at the 2009 Juno Awards.

The lyrics of "Le monopole de la douleur" explore a complex and tumultuous relationship that is coming to an end. The lines depict two individuals who are saying their goodbyes, kissing each other while simultaneously leaving behind the pain and intensity of their shared moments. The mention of the melting snow on the ground serves as a metaphor indicating that the singer's words have reached their limit and can no longer be effective in conveying their feelings.
The first paragraph highlights the frustration and miscommunication between the two individuals. The singer expresses their desire to talk about the end of their relationship, but the other person seems uninterested and unable to listen. The mention of "maudite fin" (damned end) showcases the other person's pessimistic perspective and lack of understanding. The reference to "épopées" (epics) and "noirs" (darkness) signifies the negative emotions and struggles surrounding their interactions.
The second paragraph delves into the pain and suffering experienced by both individuals. The singer confronts the belief held by the other person that they are the sole sufferer in the relationship, highlighting their own wounds and struggles. You speak as if things were waiting for you, but you revel in your forgetfulness) suggests that the other person avoids taking responsibility for their actions and remains trapped in a cycle of forgetting. The singer asserts that they have also felt pain and deserve recognition for their experiences.
In the third paragraph, the singer reflects on the transient nature of love and the nostalgia they feel for the intense moments they shared. They emphasize the depth of their connection by saying that they do not know if their past flames are counted, but they miss them more than anything. This juxtaposition of present separation and past intensity creates a sense of longing and regret.
The final paragraph speaks to the exhaustion and loss of hope within the relationship. The singer laments the fact that they are shouting louder than the other person but not being heard. The dreams they once cherished have turned into nightmares. The repeated phrase "Mais j'en ai marre" (But I'm tired of it) conveys their weariness and frustration with holding onto hope. In the final lines, the singer affirms their own pain, seeking to be acknowledged alongside the other person's suffering.
Overall, "Le monopole de la douleur" explores the themes of miscommunication, pain, nostalgia, and the desire for recognition within a failing relationship. Through vivid imagery and heartfelt expressions, Cœur de Pirate portrays the complexities of human emotions and the challenges faced when trying to convey them to another person.
