Béatrice has played the piano since the age of three, which was initiated by her mother, a professional pianist. She later played as a keyboardist in the post-hardcore band December Strikes First when she was 15 years old. In March 2007, after five years of music education, she started composing her own songs.
After a brief stint as keyboardist for Bonjour Brumaire, a French-Canadian Indie Rock/Indie Pop band, she released her solo debut album Cœur de pirate in 2008 on the Québécois independent record label Grosse Boîte. The album found much critical acclaim and was subsequently nominated for Francophone Album of the Year at the 2009 Juno Awards.

The lyrics to Cœur de Pirate's song "Une chanson brisée" tell the story of a broken relationship and the conflicting emotions that come with it. The song begins with the singer reminiscing about a moment when their partner placed their head on their heart and looked up at them. It was during this intimate moment that their partner raised a question that sparked a debate. The partner then confesses their feelings and suggests that the singer should write a song about them.
However, as the singer takes a moment to reflect on their relationship, they recall instances when their partner had abandoned them for social gatherings or other commitments. They remember times when their partner didn't show up for important plans or chose to prioritize other activities. Despite these flaws, the partner claims their love justifies their forgetfulness.
But as time goes on, the singer's wounds begin to reopen, and they realize that their partner doesn't understand the pain they have endured. In the chorus, the singer expresses their frustration and disappointment, stating that their partner deserves nothing more than a broken song. They apologize for their decision to leave.
In the second verse, the singer reflects on the steps they took to assure others that they had a future together. However, their friends were concerned because they knew that their partner's ex was still waiting for them in their bedroom. Despite this, the partner continues to justify their actions with their love, leading the singer to conclude that their partner only deserves a broken song.
Overall, the lyrics of "Une chanson brisée" explore the conflicting emotions of love and disappointment in a failing relationship. The singer wrestles with their partner's forgetfulness and lack of understanding, ultimately realizing that they deserve better.
