In 1952 she married juggler Erik van Aro (Gerd Eric Horst Scholz). He recognized her talent and accompanied her in her initial years of worldwide success, although they later divorced. In 1953, she made her first recordings with Kurt Edelhagen. Soon afterwards she achieved great success with songs like "Malagueña", "The Breeze and I", and "Dreh dich nicht um" with the Werner Müller orchestra. In 1955 she was featured on the "Colgate Comedy Hour" with Gordon MacRae. Between 1966 and 1972 she was a frequent guest on the Dean Martin Show. In 1972, she married the British pianist Roy Budd; they had a son, Alexander, but they divorced in 1979.
In Germany she was a major performer of Schlager music. There she recorded Cole Porter's "I love Paris" i.e. "Ganz Paris träumt von der Liebe", which sold more than 500,000 copies in (1954.) Like in other countries where she was popular, some in Germany mistakenly consider her a German singer.
Over the years, she has recorded or performed with many international stars, including Louis Armstrong, Benny Goodman, Ella Fitzgerald, Woody Herman, the Tommy Dorsey Orchestra, Buddy Rich, Sy Oliver, Claus Ogerman, and Chet Baker.
In 2001, she released a new album Girltalk with harpist Catherine Michel. She is also the mother of singer Eric van Aro, Jr.
Ev'ry Time We Say Goodbye
Caterina Valente Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
Every time we say goodbye, I wonder why a little
Why the gods above me, who must be in the know
think so little of me that they allow you go
When your near there's such an air of Spring about it
I can hear a lark somewhere begin to sing about it
There's no love song finer but how strange
Every time we say goodbye
The lyrics of Caterina Valente's song Ev'ry Time We Say Goodbye express the pain of separation and the feeling of being deserted by the gods above. The phrase "Every time we say goodbye, I die a little" implies that every time the singer parts from their lover, it's as if a part of them is dying as well. The following line "Every time we say goodbye, I wonder why a little" represents the confusion and the lack of understanding of why they have to say goodbye so often. The singer then questions the gods above, who seem to allow this pain and heartbreak to continue.
The second half of the song takes on a more positive note, as the singer describes the feelings that come with being near their lover. The line "When your near there's such an air of Spring about it" suggests that being close to their lover brings new life and energy to the singer. The imagery of a lark singing symbolizes new beginnings and hope for a better future with their lover. However, the final verse, "There's no love song finer but how strange/The change from major to minor/Every time we say goodbye" refers to the sudden shift in mood and emotion that occurs every time the singer has to say goodbye. The change from a major key to a minor key represents the shift from happiness to sadness when they part ways.
Overall, the song Ev'ry Time We Say Goodbye reflects the pain of separation and the joy of being in love, but also the confusion and internal turmoil that comes with it every time they have to say goodbye.
