The Closer You Are
Channels Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
Blank words no thought behind those eyes
Walk out hide the face from me
Because i don't know the meaning
In seeing you all at
You make it look so easy
Strung out on the everything you want
You think it looks so easy
It must come down
Where are you now
When you come crawling back
I'll turn you down
Where are you now
When you come crawling back
I'll turn you down
Last call tripping in your mind
First time I think you realize
Run down begin your end
Because I don't see the meaning
In knowing you at all
You make it look so easy
Strung out on the everything you want
You think it looks so easy
When everything comes up
It must come down
Where are you now
When you come crawling back
I'll turn you down
Where are you now
When you come crawling back
I'll turn you down
Where are you now
When you come crawling back
I'll turn you down
Where are you now
When you come crawling back
I'll turn you down
Where are you now
When you come crawling back
I'll turn you down
Where are you now
When you come crawling back
I'll turn you down
The lyrics to Channels's song "The Closer You Are" depict a person who has been hurt and deceived by someone they trusted. The first verse talks about the lies and lack of sincerity in the other person's words and eyes. The singer finds it hard to understand how the other person can make everything look so easy and perfect, despite the pain they caused. The chorus talks about the singer's decision to turn down the other person's attempt to come back or reconcile. The second verse indicates the realization of the other person's mistakes and the consequences they face as a result. The singer refuses to accept the other person back into their life and move on to better things.
The lyrics are a powerful statement about the value of honesty and sincerity in relationships. The singer's rejection of the other person's efforts to reconcile is a reflection of the deep hurt they experienced. The lyrics encourage listeners to be cautious about who they trust and to be willing to cut off toxic people from their lives.

Great to hear this version after listening to the Frank Zappa cover version for 40 years. He was a big doo wop fan!

I'm 81 years old now. This along with two other songs were and continue to be my favorite doo top songs of all-time. Story Untold by Nutmegs and This Is Story by Gene and Eunice are the other two. I was 15 in 1955. These songs bring me right back to those golden times. Hope all the Channels are still living and happy.
