Very engaged in the civil society, he sang and personified the lust for life, the hopes and the doubts of his generation, often clashing with politicians, elites, and older generations. He is especially famous for a tense debate about the struggles, hopes and doubts of French youth with the then first secretary of the French Socialist party, François Mitterrand, who was later twice elected president of France. Later he also had problems in a misunderstood verbal clash about French veterans.

Daniel Balavoine loved Africa and this transpires in many of his songs. He dedicated himself to humanitarian projects and took part in the Paris-Dakar rallye two times. The third time he took part only for humanitarian reasons. On the 14th january 1986, around 8pm, his helicopter crashed between Mali and Burkina-Faso, killing all five passengers, putting an end to his career, and leaving behind his pregnant wife Corine and his son Jeremy.

Overall Meaning

In S.O.S. D'un Terrien En Détresse, Daniel Balavoine speaks to the feelings of isolation and detachment that he has experienced throughout his life. Fans of Daniel, don’t be angry at Dimash, if not for him singing this song I never would’ve found Daniel. I looked into his life and cried about his tragic and untimely death. For the record, the music for the song "SOS d'un terrien en détresse" was composed by Michel Berger (a very great French composer) especially to exploit the vocal qualities of Daniel Balavoine who, for his part, add soul to it as he did to all his interpretations. This video that you have just watched is truly unique because it is the only time (in 1985) we can see him sang this song live on French TV before his tragic death on January 14, 1986.
Because of the great Ethiopian famines, Daniel was committed to Africa through the Paris-Dakar Rally. And it was during the transport of water pumps for the cultivation of rice that he died, along with 4 others, in a helicopter accident while flying over the Malian desert. This man was just great in everything.

I think after a couple of listens, I have to say, I prefer this version. As an English only speaker it took me a couple of listens to fully understand the beauty of the French pronunciation. In addition, all the other versions of SOS up until Dimash mimics Daniel Balavoine interpretation. It really grows on you further after seeing/hearing Gregory Lemarchal, Norman Grouix, and Bruno Pelleteir sing it as well. I guess its their native tongues. I love the song even more.

Daniel sang it first without knowing any other previous version. He didn 't study lyric and music at university level as Dimash did. He performed it live analogique and non digital without computers and digital effects. A man with a great deal of humanity and good haert who died standing for what He beleieved in. He did a lot for many. Artisticly I was truly surprised by the range of his voice through out this speachless and moving performance. I didn 't know he was hable of that many tones. RIP

А для меня СОС Даниэля (оригинальный исполнитель) и кавер Димаша - лучшие эмоционально, и их исполнение соответствует сюжету Стармании, из которой и взята ария СОС. Such a beautiful and heartfelt rendition. This song was, I believe, written for him and his unusual vocal range, for the musical Starmania in the '70s. This man is singing a story...I would love to see the musical if it is available. I love Dimash too, just very different contexts. Beautiful, moving song, no matter the singer. RIP Daniel Balavoine.

Yes, it was wriiten for him. Michel Berger, the composer, knew exactly Daniel and his vocal capacities. they were friends. There is an english version of "Starmania": "Tycoon". I don´t know now, but before corona, "Starmania" still was played in Paris, but the 2nd version and setup, not the original version and setup of 1979. The one after Daniel, who had the vocal capacity to sing that song, was Renaud Hantson, in 1989-1990. Have a great day!

Dimash is an incredible singer, but he’s very much a performer too. He’s singing is so bombastic and flashy that he doesn’t (I believe) capture the heart of the song, which is more somber and introspective. His version is still very good, but like you said, they’re very different contexts. Which you prefer will ultimately come down to personal preferences.

I don't understand any of the debates in here tbh. Daniel Balavoine was interpreting the character from Starmania, with his words, his feelings, his past. Dimash is proposing a vocal performance and I guess he had to learn everything phonetically, he is very impressive indeed. But the two performances don't have the same goal at all, the aim of Dimash is an impressive vocal performance and the aim of Daniel was to interpret a character. (with an impressive vocal performance, as a result haha)

I agree. And I prefer Gregory's version over Daniel. Dimash is my favorite singer, but for this song, he is behind Gregory and Daniel because he just hit the notes, but not really feel the song. I don't care about his pronounciation, but he totally skip and miss some important parts of the song (to just do the more impressive one). But he's still my favorite singer, because I know he can sing with a lot of emotion and passion, he did it a lot. But of course, it was a vocal show at The Singer

Now reading down those comments is just chaotic.. i am not a fan to both of them but i love Dimash singing I've listened repeatedly and the song bought me here so thank to Dimash for introducing me to Daniel cause i haven't heard Daniel singing before... I hope Daniel would be proud of Dimash for singing the song beautifully. Just seen both versions recently. Dimash's range is unquestionably supernatural however the amount of David's emotions is blissfully pure coming from the deep recesses of the heart in his own language which heightens the sublimity, perhaps not designed for stage gimmicks

yep, it was written specifically for Balavoine's multi-octave voice. Dimash has great vocal talent but for me there's no comparison: Daniel >lives< every syllable of this song, Dimash barely even seems to know what he's singing. But I'm very grateful to him for bringing the song such international attention after all these years.

Dimash sings the song with opera lyric voice. The sound of Dimash voice is amazing. Bruno pelletier sings it amazingly too. However this song was built to fit Daniel balavoine's voice, he had the feeling when he sang. Music is not just about sounding good, perfect technique, music knowledge and performance, is most of all about feeling, and Daniel balavoine had those feelings, he knew what he was talking about. Yea the song is supposed to be sang in a very light and strict tempo manner. Although dimash is good at singing the song does not fit him very well. He made too many changes that almost butchers or gets rid of the main structure of the piece. I think dimash chose this piece to show off or flex his skills instead of singing it in the original style.

It doesn't fit the style. Although u can disagree with my statement in my opinion I think this song isn't suited for dimash. Just my opinion

Fascinating how almost 40 years later - a very gifted singer (Dimash) can bring new life, fame and success to an incredible song and fresh recognition to people who have flown away from this planet so long ago - as the lyrics to the song imply - ("I want to be like a bird, flying high over the world...") I would love it if any of my songs would get re-produced re-sung, embraced and celebrated when I'm long passed away. Not sure I would know about it tho...
