Very engaged in the civil society, he sang and personified the lust for life, the hopes and the doubts of his generation, often clashing with politicians, elites, and older generations. He is especially famous for a tense debate about the struggles, hopes and doubts of French youth with the then first secretary of the French Socialist party, François Mitterrand, who was later twice elected president of France. Later he also had problems in a misunderstood verbal clash about French veterans.
Daniel Balavoine loved Africa and this transpires in many of his songs. He dedicated himself to humanitarian projects and took part in the Paris-Dakar rallye two times. The third time he took part only for humanitarian reasons. On the 14th january 1986, around 8pm, his helicopter crashed between Mali and Burkina-Faso, killing all five passengers, putting an end to his career, and leaving behind his pregnant wife Corine and his son Jeremy.

Qu'est ce qui t'amène
Oh Lucie, oh Lucie
Qu'est ce qui te gène
Toute la ville t'appartient
Toute la ville est dans tes mains
Le reste n'est qu'histoire ancienne
Tu connaissais déjà la fin
Lucie, oh Lucie
C'est pas la peine
Oh Lucie, oh Lucie
Lucie
The song Lucie by Daniel Balavoine is a story about a woman named Lucie who owns the town and how she is perceived by the people around her. The lyrics portray Lucie as someone who has power and control over the town which is conveyed through the lines "Toute la ville t'appartient, Toute la ville est dans tes mains" which means "The whole town belongs to you, the whole town is in your hands".
However, despite her power, Lucie seems to be struggling with something that the people around her can't seem to understand. They judge her based on how she presents herself and the way she dresses, instead of trying to understand what she might be going through. The line "C'est la manière dont tu te fardes, Qui ressemble à un aveu" which means "It's the way you dress up, that looks like a confession" could suggest that Lucie uses her appearance as a way to hide her true feelings.
The singer also recounts his own memories with Lucie and how he tried to find dignity and acceptance in front of her. He seems to have moved on from their relationship and is living a different life now. The song ends with the phrase "Pourtant la ville t'appartient, Tu le sais bien, La ville t'appartient, Tu le sais bien, Lucie" which means "Yet, the town belongs to you, You know it well, The town belongs to you, You know it well, Lucie" showing that despite everything, Lucie still owns the town.
