Heavily influenced by American rock & roll, Mitchell (who went solo in 1963) has often recorded outside France, at first in London, but later in Memphis and Nashville, Tennessee. Guitarist Jimmy Page and drummer Bob Graham were among the British session musicians who regularly supported him in London.

L'esprit grande prairie
Il était loin loin, loin loin
Il était loin loin, loin loin
Il y avait des chevaux sauvages
Le soir, dans les embouteillages
Solitaire, en somme, lonesome
Je voyais des paysages
À la fin du film, tout est dit
Le p'tit Claude s'appelle Eddy
L'histoire dit que j'avais pris
L'esprit grande prairie
Il était loin loin, loin loin
Il était loin loin, loin loin
Il était loin loin, loin loin
Il était loin loin, loin loin
In Eddy Mitchell's song "L'Esprit Grande Prairie," he sings about a dreamy and different boy who preferred to make his own little things instead of going to school. Mitchell contrasts the boy's behavior with the obedience of the other children who marched in line in the city. The boy's disconnection from conventional expectations is emphasized through the line "On sentait par ces éléments qu'il était différent" ("We could tell from these elements that he was different").
In the second verse, Mitchell sings about himself falling in love with a woman named Baby Doll who wanted a baby and a beautiful new house. However, Mitchell's eyes were already looking to the other side of the river, indicating his desire to wander and escape the expectations of domesticity. The chorus repeats the idea that he was in a different world, far from the mundane and ordinary.
