Born in Rome, Italy, Vianello started his career in 1956. His first successes came in 1961, with Il capello (Hair) and Pinne fucile ed occhiali (Fins, Spear, and Goggles), which both charted up to the 2nd position in the Italian Hit Parade.
Vianello had several successes in the 1960s, such as Guarda come dondolo (Watch as I Swing), Abbronzatissima (Very Tanned), O mio signore (Oh My Lord) which topped the charts, and I Watussi which went up to 3rd. After a less successful period, he re-launched his career in the 1970s, founding the duo Vianella with his wife Wilma Goich. Their main hit of the period was Semo gente de borgata (We Are People from a Small Town) that reached #7. In the late 1970s, he reprised his solo career.
As of 2006, the songs of Vianello were included in the soundtracks of 64 films while the Italian rights-collecting agency SIAE estimates sales of over 50 million Vianello records worldwide.

Carta Vetrata
Edoardo Vianello Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
Ti guarda e ride
Ti prende in giro
Poi guarda me
Sei come un foglio di carta vetrata
Con tutta quanta la pelle insabbiata
Devi levarti la sabbia di dosso
Se vuoi venire vicino a me
Sei come un foglio di carta vetrata
Una fettina di carne impanata
Per questa volta tu sei perdonata
Ma da domani non farlo più
Quante volte devo dire
Ma tu non lo vuoi capire
E non vedi che la gente
Ti guarda e ride
Ti prende in giro
Poi guarda me
Ah
Sei come un foglio di carta vetrata
Una fettina di carne impanata
Per questa volta tu sei perdonata
Ma da domani non farlo più
Quante volte devo dire
Ma tu non lo vuoi capire
Quante volte devo dire
Ma tu non lo vuoi capire
Quante volte devo dire
Ma tu non lo vuoi capire
Quante volte devo dire
Ma tu non lo vuoi capire
La sabbia no
The song "Carta Vetrata" by Edoardo Vianello is about a woman who has rough, abrasive skin like sandpaper and needs to clean up before being near the singer. In the first verse, the singer compares the woman to a sheet of sandpaper and notes that she needs to clean off the excess sand on her skin before trying to take in the sun with him. He highlights that his delicate skin cannot handle the roughness of hers. He urges her to wash up before laying on his towel and being close to him.
In the second verse, the singer repeats his request for the woman to clean up the sand on her before getting close to him. He notes that it's like she's a piece of breaded meat and that this time she's forgiven, but in the future, she needs to be more considerate. He feels embarrassed when people observe the sand on her skin compared to the flawless skin of those around them. The final verse repeats everything previously said and concludes that sand must be removed from the body when going to the beach.
Overall, the song's message is straightforward, but it highlights the importance of cleanliness and how it reflects on someone's physical appearance. It also emphasizes the need to show consideration for others when at the beach since the appearance of sand on one's body could be embarrassing for those around them.

Sei come un foglio di carta vetrata
You are as rough as sandpaper
Con tutta quanta la pelle insabbiata
With sand all over your skin
Se tu continui I tuoi bagni di sabbia
If you keep taking sand baths
Come puoi prendere il sole con me
How can you sunbathe with me?
Per la mia pelle così delicata
For my delicate skin
Se vuoi sdraiarti sul mio asciugamano
If you want to lie on my towel
Fatti la doccia poi vieni qui
Take a shower first and then come here
Quante volte debbo dire
How many times do I have to say
Ma tu non lo vuoi capire
But you don't want to understand
E non vedi che la gente
And don't you see that people
Ti guarda e ride
Are looking at you and laughing?
Ti prende in giro
Are making fun of you
Poi guarda me
And then they look at me
Devi levarti la sabbia di dosso
You have to get rid of the sand on you
Se vuoi venire vicino a me
If you want to come close to me
Una fettina di carne impanata
A breaded slice of meat
Per questa volta tu sei perdonata
You're forgiven this time
Ma da domani non farlo più
But don't do it again from tomorrow
La sabbia no
No more sand
