Hardy signed her first contract with the record label Vogue in November 1961. In April 1962, shortly after finishing school, her first album, "Oh oh Chéri", appeared, with the title song written by Johnny Hallyday's writing duo. The flip side of the record, "Tous les garçons et les filles" became a huge success, which sold 2 million copies. She had long hair and usually wore jeans with a leather jacket, while accompanying her songs on the guitar.
She sang in English, Spanish, and German occasionally. In 1963, she represented Monaco in the Grand Prix d'Eurovision de la Chanson with "L'amour s'en va" and emerged in fifth place. In 1968, she received the Grand Prix du Disque Académie Charles Cros.
In 1981, she married her long-time companion Jacques Dutronc, with whom she had already had a son (Thomas Dutronc) in 1973. In May 2000, she had a comeback with the album "Clair Obscur". Her son played the guitar, and her husband sang the duet "Puisque vous partez en voyage". Iggy Pop and Etienne Daho participated, as well. She currently lives near Paris.
In 2006 she released a new duets album entitled "Parenthèses" which included a song with her son Thomas.
In 2021, Hardy announced that her health had worsened and that she would not be able to sing again owing to the effects of cancer therapy.
La maison où j’ai grandi
Françoise Hardy Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
je revois la maison où j'ai grandi
Il me revient des tas de choses
je vois des roses dans un jardin
Là où vivaient des arbres, maintenant
la ville est là
et la maison, les fleurs que j'aimais tant
n'existent plus
Ils savaient rire, tous mes amis
ils savaient si bien partager mes jeux
mais tout doit finir pourtant dans la vie
et j'ai dû partir, les larmes aux yeux
Mes amis me demandaient "Pourquoi pleurer?"
The lyrics of Françoise Hardy's song, La maison où j’ai grandi, describe the nostalgia and bittersweet memories of a person who looks back on their childhood home. The singer reflects on the things she remembers from her past, such as the roses in the garden and the trees that no longer stand in a city that has replaced her old home. She also remembers the friends she had as a child who made her laugh and share her games, but who she had to leave when she moved away. Her friends ask her why she is crying, and she responds that she will miss them and the simplicity of their lives. As the singer grows up, she realizes that she left her heart in the place where she grew up and wishes she could return. She describes the disappointment of not finding her old home and being unable to recover her lost memories, friends, and the familiar sounds of laughter.
The song captures the universal experience of feeling a sense of longing for one’s past, as people grow up, move on, and change, and their old homes and memories of childhood fade away. The singers voice and melancholic melody evoke the feelings of nostalgia and melancholy that come from reflecting on one's memories of home. The song emphasizes the fleeting nature of time and the preciousness of our memories that connect us to our past.

The house where I grew up
When I turn to my memories
I see again the house where I grew up
A million thoughts comes back to me:
I see roses in a garden
There, where the trees used to live,
now the city is there
and the house, the flowers I loved so much, no longer exists
they knew how to laugh, all my friends
they knew so well how to take part in my games
but everything must come to an end in life
and i had to leave, tears in my eyes
my friends ask me "why do you cry?"
and "traveling the world is better than staying.
You'll find everything here you cannot see,
an entire city that sleeps at night under the lights"
When I left this part of my childhood,
I knew already that I was leaving my heart
All of my friends envied my luck,
but i still think of their happiness,
of the carefree way that made them laugh
and it seems that I hear myself telling them:
"I'll come back one day, one fine morning amid your laughter,
yes, one day I'll take the first train of memory".
Time passes and here I am again,
searching in vain for the house I loved.
Where are the stones, where are the roses,
all of the things I held dear?
Of them and of me, no trace remains.
Other people, other houses have stolen their place.
There, where the trees live, now the city is there
and the house, where is the house where I grew up?
I don't know where my house is,
the house where I grew up.
Where is my house?
Who knows where my house is?
My house, where is my house?
Who knows where my house is?
