Hardy signed her first contract with the record label Vogue in November 1961. In April 1962, shortly after finishing school, her first album, "Oh oh Chéri", appeared, with the title song written by Johnny Hallyday's writing duo. The flip side of the record, "Tous les garçons et les filles" became a huge success, which sold 2 million copies. She had long hair and usually wore jeans with a leather jacket, while accompanying her songs on the guitar.
She sang in English, Spanish, and German occasionally. In 1963, she represented Monaco in the Grand Prix d'Eurovision de la Chanson with "L'amour s'en va" and emerged in fifth place. In 1968, she received the Grand Prix du Disque Académie Charles Cros.
In 1981, she married her long-time companion Jacques Dutronc, with whom she had already had a son (Thomas Dutronc) in 1973. In May 2000, she had a comeback with the album "Clair Obscur". Her son played the guitar, and her husband sang the duet "Puisque vous partez en voyage". Iggy Pop and Etienne Daho participated, as well. She currently lives near Paris.
In 2006 she released a new duets album entitled "Parenthèses" which included a song with her son Thomas.
In 2021, Hardy announced that her health had worsened and that she would not be able to sing again owing to the effects of cancer therapy.

The lyrics of the song Plus Personne by Françoise Hardy describe intense emotions of pain, longing, and loss. The first verse talks about the descent into a place where there is no return, a feeling of being stuck in a painful place from which one cannot escape. The use of contrasting adjectives like douce (sweet) and dure (hard) and couleur clair (light color) and obscure (dark) create a sense of ambivalence, showing that these emotions are complex and not easily defined. The second verse uses poetic imagery of a frozen sun and a sea of ice to depict a feeling of being trapped in eternal darkness. The reference to eternity and space suggests a feeling of being lost in time and space, with no way out of the pain and suffering. The lyrics also make a reference to the destruction of the self, implying that the feeling of loss is all-encompassing and all-destroying.
The chorus repeats the phrase "Il n'y a plus personne" (there is no one left), emphasizing the idea of loneliness and isolation. It is a powerful statement that suggests the singer feels as if they are completely alone in the world. The lyrics speak of a separation, of a love lost, of a bond that has been broken, and these losses are felt in every fiber of the singer's being. The last line "Sans toi, il n'y a plus personne" (Without you, there is no one left) speaks volumes of the love the singer has lost and how it has completely consumed them.

Je n'attends plus personne
Non, je n'attends plus rien
C'était toi ou personne
C'est toi ou ce n'est rien
Je n'attends plus personne
Et toi, le sais-tu bien?
Oui, toi qui m'abandonnes
Pour t'en aller plus loin
Pour toi, c'est très facile
Tu poursuis ton chemin

This is the 'gist' of the song, my hasty translation being more literal than idiomatic. We are asked to believe that some chap has abandoned the gorgeous 1960's Françoise to wander off aimlessly in search of other girls. Well, not the most likely of scenarios but there you are...
I don't expect someone new
No, I expect nothing more
It was you or nobody
It's you or nothing
I don't expect someone new
And you, are you aware?
Yes, you who abandons me
To go far away
For you, it's very easy
You follow your own path
Going from town to town
Never needing anyone
I don't await someone new
Since I saw you
I want nobody else
Since I met you
I don't expect someone new
'Cause you've left me again
What life gives me
Seems worthless now
For you, it's very easy
You just don't stop,
Going from girl to girl,
Never retracing your steps
You don't care that I long for you
I don't expect someone new
No, I expect nothing more
I don't expect someone new
No, I expect nothing more
