Akyol is the daughter of fellow artist Muzaffer Akyol, and, like her father, she is involved in visual arts as well as being a graduate from cultural studies. Her debut solo record, Develerle Yaşıyorum, stroked a new chord in Turkish alternative music scene. She unearthed her own story expanded into nine tracks in May 2014. She gained notoriety in the scene as each parts of Toz ve Toz, and the local hypnotic "electro-acoustic" band Seni Görmem İmkansız with Tuğçe Şenoğul, now determined to continue her musical venture as a whimsical storyteller.
The singer's sound can be defined as ‘musiki’ rather than the old good muzak itself. An old school word used in Turkish language for music, be that a more sophisticated, oriental and spiritual sound.
Akyol received Best Artist award at Songlines Music Awards 2019.

Ama yedi cihan benim
Derdimin karnı tok
Seneler ne hain
Bahtım ağlar ardımdan
Hep aza talim
Koy masaya bir duble buzsuz olsun
Bu garip devranda seni aradım durdum
Varlıktan geçip yokluğa tutundum
Ah'lar ağacında ham meyvayım
Buldum sandım, kavruldum, kaçamıyorum
Halimiz itten beter keyfimiz paşada yok
Koy masaya bir duble buzsuz olsun
The lyrics of Gaye Su Akyol's song "Halimiz İtten Beter" describe the bleak and desperate circumstances of the singer's life. The opening line "Bi' kuruş yok cepte" (There's not a penny in my pocket) serves as a stark reminder of the singer's financial instability and insecurity. Despite this, the singer declares that they possess everything in the world ("Ama yedi cihan benim"), perhaps alluding to the fact that material possessions are not the key to happiness and fulfillment.
The lyrics then turn to the singer's internal struggles and emotional pain. The line "Derdimin karnı tok, seneler ne hain" (My troubles are well-fed, the years are treacherous) is a poignant commentary on how emotional scars can remain long after the initial wounds have healed. The singer goes on to say that their destiny weeps for them ("Bahtım ağlar ardımdan") and that they constantly strive for perfection ("Hep aza talim").
The chorus, "Halimiz itten beter keyfimiz paşada yok, koy masaya bir duble buzsuz olsun" (Our condition is worse than a dog's, we have no joy like a nobleman, pour a double on the table without ice), is a bitter reflection of the singer's current state. The slang phrase "Halimiz itten beter" translates to "Our condition is worse than a dog's", emphasizing the singer's despair and hopelessness. The request to pour a double without ice could signify the singer's desire for temporary relief from their struggles.
In the second verse, the lyrics become even more introspective, as the singer appears to be searching for answers within themselves. They describe their search for a lost love ("Bu garip devranda seni aradım durdum") and their journey from existence to nothingness ("Varlıktan geçip yokluğa tutundum"). The final line "Buldum sandım, kavruldum, kaçamıyorum" (I thought I had found, I burned, I cannot escape) suggests that the singer's search has been futile or perhaps even damaging.
Overall, "Halimiz İtten Beter" is a poignant and reflective piece that explores themes of despair, loneliness, and the human search for meaning and connection.
