Read Full Bio ↴Gino Paoli (born 23 September 1934) is an Italian singer-songwriter.
Paoli was born in Monfalcone, but moved very early to Genoa.
After several different jobs, he was called by Ricordi with his friends Luigi Tenco and Bruno Lauzi. His first success was the single "La gatta". This was followed by "Sapore di sale", arranged by Ennio Morricone. In the same year he attempted suicide by shooting at his heart, but he survived.
In 1974 he returned with the LP I semafori rossi non sono Dio, followed by Il mio mestiere (1977). Both showed a more mature inspiration than his 1960s works. In the 1980s Paoli procuded a series of successful albums, and in 1985 he toured Italy together with Ornella Vanoni.
In 1987 he was elected to the Italian Chamber of Deputies for the Italian Communist Party. He abandoned politics in 1992.
He was married with actress Stefania Sandrelli, from whom he divorced. Their daughter Amanda Sandrelli is also an actress.

Albergo A Ore
Gino Paoli Lyrics

D'un albergo a ore
Porto su il caffè
A chi fa l'amore.
Vanno su e giù
Coppie tutte eguali,
Non le vedo più
Manco con gli occhiali...
Vedendo quei due arrivare un mattino:
Puliti, educati, sembravano finti
Poi, come San Pietro,
Coppie tutte eguali
Non le vedo più
Manco con gli occhiali !
Ma sono rimasto là come un cretino
Aprendo la porta
In quel grigio mattino,
Se n'erano andati,
In silenzio perfetto,
Morire a vent'anni e poi, proprio qui !
Me Ii hanno incartati nei bianchi lenzuoli
E l'ultimo viaggio l' han fatto da soli:
Né fiori né gente, soltanto un furgone,
Ma là dove stanno, staranno benone !
Lo lavoro al bar
D'un albergo ad ore
Portò su il caffè
A chi fa l'amore...
Lo sarò un cretino
Ma chissà perché
Non mi va di dare a nessuno
La chiave del tre !
The lyrics of Gino Paoli's song Albergo A Ore describe the observations of a barista who works at a hotel that rents rooms by the hour. The singer describes how he brings coffee to the hotel guests, who are often couples, and watches as they come and go in a constant cycle. However, the tone of the song shifts when the singer recounts a particular couple who stood out to him one morning. They were polite, seemed genuine, and he gave them the best room in the hotel. He locked them inside their "paradise" and went about his day. When he returned later, he found that the couple had died in the room. The singer appears to be haunted by the memory of the couple and is reluctant to give anyone else the key to that room.
The song touches on themes such as the fleeting nature of love, the mundanity of work, and the ultimate fate that awaits all of us. The singer is jaded and somewhat disconnected from the world around him, but he is impacted by the tragedy of the couple's death. The lyrics are poignant and evoke a sense of melancholy, but also remind us of the beauty and fragility of life.

Lo lavoro al bar
I work at a bar
D'un albergo a ore
It's a hotel by the hour
Porto su il caffè
I bring coffee
A chi fa l'amore.
To those who are making love
Vanno su e giù
They go up and down
Coppie tutte eguali,
The couples are all the same
Non le vedo più
I don't see them anymore
Manco con gli occhiali...
Even with glasses...
Ma sono rimasto là come un cretino
But I stayed there like an idiot
Vedendo quei due arrivare un mattino:
Watching those two come one morning:
Puliti, educati, sembravano finti
Clean, polite, they seemed fake
Sembravano proprio due santi dipinti !
They really seemed like two painted saints!
M' han chiesto una stanza
They asked me for a room
Gli ho fatto vedere
I showed them
La meno schifosa,
The least disgusting one,
La numero tre !
Number three!
And I put the newest sheets on the bed
Poi, come San Pietro,
Then, like Saint Peter,
Gli ho dato le chiavi
I gave them the keys
I gave them the keys to that paradise
And I closed the door on their smile!
I know I'm not involved, but it's not right,
Morire a vent'anni e poi, proprio qui !
To die at twenty and then, right here!
Me Ii hanno incartati nei bianchi lenzuoli
They wrapped me in white sheets
E l'ultimo viaggio l' han fatto da soli:
And they made the last trip alone:
Né fiori né gente, soltanto un furgone,
No flowers or people, just a van,
Ma là dove stanno, staranno benone !
But wherever they are, they'll be fine!
Ma chissà perché
But who knows why
Non mi va di dare a nessuno
I don't feel like giving anyone
La chiave del tre !
The key to room three!
