In Gino Paoli's song "Parole D'Amore," the lyrics evoke a sense of longing and desire, expressed through various comparisons. The singer imagines themselves as different entities that could bring joy and love to another person.
The first stanza begins with "If I were a memory, I could fill your eyes." This line suggests that the singer yearns to be a cherished memory in someone's mind, something that brings happiness and nostalgia when thought of. Similarly, the following line "If I were a smile, I could open your mouth" implies the desire to bring joy and laughter to the person's life, to be the source of their happiness.
The second stanza carries on with this theme, with the singer imagining becoming a dream that inhabits the person's sleep. This portrays a deep desire to become a constant presence in their thoughts and dreams, showing how much they long for a strong emotional connection. The line "If I were a cat, I could sleep on your heart" further emphasizes this yearning for intimacy and closeness, as the heart is traditionally associated with love and passion.
Moving into the third stanza, the singer explores the idea of being a poet, emphasizing the beauty they see in the person they are addressing. They express the sentiment that if they were a poet, they would proclaim the person's beauty, comparing it to something extraordinary and rare. This highlights the singer's deep appreciation and admiration for the person, noting that their beauty is as enchanting as a created day or as moving as a man shedding tears or a peaceful sleeping child.
In the final stanza, the refrain of the second stanza is repeated. Once again, the singer yearns to be a cat sleeping on the person's heart, emphasizing the desire for closeness and connection. They continue to express their longing to be a poet who can convey the person's beauty in words, comparing it to the extraordinary and unattainable things they don't possess.
Overall, "Parole D'Amore" by Gino Paoli portrays a longing for emotional connection and a deep appreciation for the beauty within another person. The lyrics paint a vivid picture of the singer's desires and their inability to possess what they desire most, making this a poignant and bittersweet portrayal of unrequited love.
