The cast is second behind The Beatles for most chart appearances by a group act in the Billboard Hot 100's history, and holds the record of sixth overall among all artists, with sixty-nine appearances. The cast has sold over thirty six million and over eleven million albums worldwide. The series' cover versions have also had a positive effect on the original recording artists, with sales of Rihanna's "Take a Bow" increasing by 189 percent after the song was covered in the Glee episode "Showmance".
The series features covers of numerous songs sung on-screen by the characters. Musical segments typically take the form of performances, as opposed to the characters singing spontaneously, as the intention is for the series to remain reality-based. Murphy is responsible for selecting all of the songs used, and strives to maintain a balance between show tunes and chart hits, as: "I want there to be something for everybody in every episode. That's a tricky mix, but that's very important — the balancing of that." Song choices are integral to script development, with Murphy explaining: "Each episode has a theme at its core. After I write the script, I will choose songs that help to move the story along."
Glee is choreographed by Zach Woodlee, and features five to eight production numbers per episode. Once music rights are cleared, songs are arranged and pre-recorded by the cast. Woodlee constructs the accompanying dance moves, which are then taught to the cast and filmed. Numbers can take several weeks to prepare, depending on complexity. Each episode costs at least $3 million to produce, and can take up to 10 days to film as a result of the elaborate choreography.
Stop! In the Name of Love / Free Your Mind
Glee Cast Lyrics

Here we go!
Stop in the name of love
Before you break my heart (Free your mind!)
Stop in the name of love
Before you break my heart (Think it over)
Artie
It doesn't mean that I'm a prostitute, no no
Puck
I like rap music, wear hip hop clothes
That doesn't mean that I'm out sellin' dope, no no no
New Directions guys
Before you can read me
You gotta learn how to see me
I said, stop in the name of love
Before you break my heart (Free your mind!)
Stop in the name of love
Before you break my heart (Think it over)
Free your mind and the rest will follow (Think it over)
Be colorblind, don't be so shallow
Sam
I've known of your
Well-secluded nights
I've even seen her
Maybe once or twice
But is her sweet expression
Worth more than my love and affection?
New Directions guys (Artie)
Before you can read me
You gotta learn how to see me
I said, stop in the name of love
Before you break my heart (Inside, inside)
Stop in the name of love
Before you break my heart (Before you break my heart, stop)
Think it over
Free your mind and the rest will follow
Be colorblind, don't be so shallow
Think it over
Free your mind and the rest will follow (Ohhh)
Be colorblind, don't be so shallow (Don't break my, don't break my heart)
Stop!
Stop! (In the name of love)
Free your mind
Stop!
Free your mind
Stop! (Oh, free your mind)
Before you can read me
You gotta learn how to see me
I said, stop in the name of love
Before you break my heart
Free your mind
Stop in the name of love
In the name of love
Before you break my heart
Free your mind
Stop in the name of love
Before you break my heart
Free your mind and the rest will follow
Be colorblind, don't be so shallow
(repeat)
Oh, think it over
Free your mind
And the rest will stop!
The Glee Cast's version of "Stop! In the Name of Love / Free Your Mind" deals with themes of prejudice, stereotypes, and discrimination. The lyrics of the song convey the message that it is important to stop and think before judging someone based on first impressions or superficial characteristics. The lead vocalists, including Finn and Artie, urge listeners to "stop in the name of love" before breaking their hearts with hurtful words or actions. They are also urging individuals to "free [their] minds" and break free from stereotypes and biases that are holding them back.
Throughout the song, the New Directions guys challenge the audience to see beyond appearances and get to know people for who they really are. They make reference to the ways in which people can be unfairly judged based on their clothing choices, taste in music, or romantic partners. By acknowledging their own personal experiences with prejudice and discrimination, the cast invites listeners to do the same and work towards creating a more accepting and inclusive society.
