The cast is second behind The Beatles for most chart appearances by a group act in the Billboard Hot 100's history, and holds the record of sixth overall among all artists, with sixty-nine appearances. The cast has sold over thirty six million and over eleven million albums worldwide. The series' cover versions have also had a positive effect on the original recording artists, with sales of Rihanna's "Take a Bow" increasing by 189 percent after the song was covered in the Glee episode "Showmance".
The series features covers of numerous songs sung on-screen by the characters. Musical segments typically take the form of performances, as opposed to the characters singing spontaneously, as the intention is for the series to remain reality-based. Murphy is responsible for selecting all of the songs used, and strives to maintain a balance between show tunes and chart hits, as: "I want there to be something for everybody in every episode. That's a tricky mix, but that's very important — the balancing of that." Song choices are integral to script development, with Murphy explaining: "Each episode has a theme at its core. After I write the script, I will choose songs that help to move the story along."
Glee is choreographed by Zach Woodlee, and features five to eight production numbers per episode. Once music rights are cleared, songs are arranged and pre-recorded by the cast. Woodlee constructs the accompanying dance moves, which are then taught to the cast and filmed. Numbers can take several weeks to prepare, depending on complexity. Each episode costs at least $3 million to produce, and can take up to 10 days to film as a result of the elaborate choreography.

Mama said get your ass out of bed
I said hell to the no
Said wash your grandma's nasty head
I said hell to the no
They tried to take away my tots
I said hell to the no
And I say hell to the no
Ohh, try to make me change my weave
Well, I got something up my sleeve
It's a whole lot of
Woah, oh, oh, oh, oh
Hell to the no-no, no-no, no-no, no-no
I said woah, oh, oh, oh, oh
Hell to the no-no, no-no, no-no, no-no
I'm not tryin' to diva out
But this show's gotta stop, so shout
Woah, oh, oh, oh, oh
Hell to the no-no, no-no, no-no, no-no
Tell me I should eat my wheaties
You know what?
Hell to the no (Hell to the no)
Tell me I'll come down with diabetes
Hell to the no... (Hell to the no)
Try to make me change my eats
But baby, that just isn't me
I'm a whole lot of
Woah, oh, oh, oh, oh
Hell to the no-no, no-no, no-no, no-no
I said woah, oh, oh, oh, oh
Hell to the no-no, no-no, no-no, no-no
I'm not trying to diva out
But this show's gotta stop, so shout
Woah, oh, oh, oh, oh
Hell to the no-no, no-no, no-no, no-no
Take me, you can leave me, but I won't ever change
If you don't like the rules, don't play my game
Talk to me to get R-E-S-P-E-C-T
But if I don't, it's all in me
Woah, oh, oh, oh, oh
Hell to the no-no, no-no, no-no, no-no
I said woah, oh, oh, oh, oh
Hell to the no-no, no-no, no-no, no-no
Not trying to diva out
But this show's gotta stop, so shout
Woah, oh, oh, oh, oh
Hell to the no-no, no-no, no-no, no-no
I said, I'm not trying to diva out
But this show's gotta stop, so shout
Woah, oh, oh, oh, oh
Hell to the no-no, no-no, no-no, no-no
Aw, hell to the no!
The lyrics to Glee Cast's song "Hell to the No" are a declaration of personal power and confidence. Mercedes is telling anyone who tries to tell her what to do or criticize her choices that she will not conform to their expectations. She starts off by rejecting her mother's request to get out of bed and wash her grandmother's hair, saying "hell to the no" to both. She also refuses to change her hairstyle or eating habits, asserting that she will not be forced to do anything she does not want to.
Mercedes is proud to be in control of her own life and choices, saying that she is the one who calls the shots. She is not trying to be a diva, but she will not let anyone treat her disrespectfully or try to change her. In the end, she tells her critics that they can take her or leave her, but she will never change for anyone.
Overall, "Hell to the No" is a powerful anthem about self-confidence and owning one's personal autonomy. It encourages listeners to stand up for themselves and their choices, even in the face of opposition.

Although the lyrics were BLATANTLY racially stereotypical, Mercedes can kill anything. Mercedes runs and high notes are some of the best in the show. Rachel's high notes are great but they both have different styles of belts and I love both. Amber is so talented

She should have gotten more credit for her original song. Compared to My head band and Only child, this was way better and it showed Mercedes different talents, like not only singing, but rapping also.
