Les vieux amants

Vingt ans d'amour, c'est l'amour fol
Mille fois tu pris ton bagage
Mille fois je pris mon envol
Et chaque meuble se souvient
Dans cette chambre sans berceau
Des éclats des vieilles tempêtes
Plus rien ne ressemblait à rien
Et moi celui de la conquête
Mais mon amour
Mon doux, mon tendre, mon merveilleux amour
Finalement, finalement
Il nous fallut bien du talent
Pour être vieux sans être adultes
Oh, mon amour
Mon doux, mon tendre, mon merveilleux amour
Oh, mon amour
Mon doux, mon tendre, mon merveilleux amour
De l'aube claire jusqu'à la fin du jour
Je t'aime encore, tu sais, je t'aime
Les vieux amants is a song written by Jacques Brel and interpreted by HK. The song brings forth emotions of passionate, yet tumultuous love, and delves into the complexities of relationships that are long-lasting. It talks about a couple who have been in love for twenty years, but have been through many challenges and have at times lost their attraction to each other. The lyrics express that despite all their disagreements and infidelities, they always found a way back to each other.
The lyrics describe how both partners have grown tired of their relationship, and each has lost interest in what they once found attractive about the other. They have become jaded, and the passage of time has taken its toll on their love. The lyrics talk about how they had to use their creativity to stay together because, as they grow old, their physical needs decrease, and they are forced to find new ways to express their love.
The song's simple melody and easy-to-relate-to lyrics have made it an enduring classic that has been covered numerous times across different genres. It shows the universality of human emotions, no matter how much society might change. The lyrics are unusually poetic and filled with metaphors, including the loose furniture becoming tangible memories of their fights, and the idea of living at war but with love.

Bien sûr, nous eûmes des orages

Vingt ans d'amour, c'est l'amour fol
Twenty years of love is a wild and passionate love
Mille fois tu pris ton bagage
A thousand times you packed your bags
Mille fois je pris mon envol
A thousand times I took flight

And every piece of furniture remembers
Dans cette chambre sans berceau
In this room without a cradle
Des éclats des vieilles tempêtes
Of the outbursts of old storms
Plus rien ne ressemblait à rien
Nothing looked like itself anymore
Tu avais perdu le goût de l'eau
You had lost your taste for water

Mais mon amour
But my love
Mon doux, mon tendre, mon merveilleux amour
My sweet, my tender, my marvelous love

From the clear dawn until the end of the day
Je t'aime encore, tu sais, je t'aime

We needed a lot of skill
Pour être vieux sans être adultes
To be old without being grown up
Et plus le temps nous fait cortège
And the more time passes by
Et plus le temps nous fait tourment
And the more time torments us
Mais n'est-ce pas le pire piège
But isn't living in peace the worst trap
Que vivre en paix pour des amants
For lovers to live in peace
Bien sûr tu pleures un peu moins tôt
Of course you cry a little later
Je me déchire un peu plus tard
I tear myself apart a little later
Nous protégeons moins nos mystères
We protect our mysteries less
On laisse moins faire le hasard
We leave less to chance
On se méfie du fil de l'eau
We distrust the flow of water
Mais c'est toujours la tendre guerre
But it's always the tender war
Oh, mon amour
Oh, my love
Mon doux, mon tendre, mon merveilleux amour
My sweet, my tender, my marvelous love
