The lyrics to Jean-Jacques Goldman's song Frères paints a picture of war, and the bond that soldiers share amidst the chaos and destruction. The opening lines establish the singer's connection to the land, and his fierce devotion to it. "Je viens des plaines, Je suis des montagnes, Ces terres-là sont les miennes, Ce sont nos campagnes" - he is proud of where he comes from and ready to fight to defend it, no matter the cost. The next few lines talk about the soldiers' duty and their unwavering commitment to it: "A nous depuis la nuit des temps, Nous y étions avant, Nous combattrons pendant 1000 ans, Jusqu'au dernier sang." They are there because they have always been there, and they will be there until the very end.
The chorus of the song talks about the brotherhood that exists between soldiers. They share the same hardships, the same fears, and the same experiences, and these bonds endure even after the war is over. Whether they are shivering in the rain or trembling with fear under enemy fire, they are there for each other. The final verse of the song turns towards the future, with the singer dreaming of a day when the fighting will end and he can return to the one he loves.
