The lyrics to Jean-Jacques Goldman's song "Comme Toi" describe the simple and innocent life of a young girl named Sarah, who is pictured in a family photo with her clear eyes and velvet dress, surrounded by her loved ones. The photo captures the happiness and sweetness of the moment, and highlights Sarah's love for music, particularly Schumann and Mozart. The song then goes on to describe Sarah's daily life, as she attends school, learns about the world and the laws that govern it, and sings songs about frogs and princesses. She cherishes her doll and her friends, including Ruth, Anna, and Jérémie, with whom she dreams of getting married one day, perhaps in the city of Varsovie.
However, Sarah's idyllic life is abruptly cut short by the actions of others who have decided her fate. The lyrics suggest that she may have been a victim of the Holocaust, with hints such as the mention of Varsovie, the capital of Poland, and her not having been born "here and now" - that is, not in France, where the song was written. The lyrics become all the more poignant as the listener realizes that Sarah's innocent and happy existence was destroyed simply because of her ethnicity, which is suggested by the mention of her having "your clear eyes and your age" - as if to say that she was just like anyone else, except for the arbitrary fact of her background.
Overall, the lyrics to "Comme Toi" are a powerful and moving commentary on the senseless and tragic loss of innocent lives, and the importance of recognizing the humanity and beauty in all people, regardless of their differences.

@samrust
Comme toi -
