His father was a UNESCO employee and his mother is from Guadeloupe. Many of the chansons he sings were written by Étienne Roda-Gil, a long time collaborator. His brother, Gérard Leclerc, is a political commentator on France 2.
For a time he was involved with French actress Miou-Miou, who in 1978 bore him a daughter, Jeanne Herry. Like her father, Jeanne has pursued a career in show business, albeit as an actress and comedian rather than as a singer.
Julien Clerc owes his fame in France to his leading role in the 1969 French language adaptation of the musical Hair. Since then he has sung a great many popular songs, and is generally considered one of the greatest francophone musicians of his generation. In 2003, he was appointed as a Goodwill Ambassador for the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees after transferring the rights to his hugely popular song, Partir, to the UN.
Donne-moi de tes nouvelles

Que le soleil caresse
Je pense a toi ma déesse
Où es tu dans ce monde perdu
Sous quel horizon de flamme de palmier
De palais ou de drame
As tu caché ton corps parfait
Rien n'est parfait dans ce monde
Seul la soif qui m'inonde
Le souvenir de ton sourire
Je ne veux pas vivre de souvenir
Parfait, comme la terre est ronde
Qui t'as arraché du monde
Au donnes moi de tes nouvelles
Tu me feras la vie plus belle
Et je viendrais te chercher
Ce soir je vais m'endormir encore
Rêver du parfum de ton corps
De ton sourire qui disparaît
Rien n'est parfait dans ce monde
Seul la soif qui m'inonde
Au souvenir de ton sourire
Je ne veux pas vivre de souvenir
Parfait, comme la terre est ronde
Qui t'a arraché du monde
Au donnes moi de tes nouvelles
Tu me feras la ville plus belle
Et je viendrais te chercher
(Musique)
Souvenir de ton sourire
Je ne veux pas vivre de souvenir
Parfait comme la terre est ronde
Qui t'a s arraché du monde
Au donnes moi de tes nouvelles
Tu me feras la ville plus belle
Et je viendrais te chercher.
Au fond d'un lit
In the depths of a bed
Que le soleil caresse
That the sun caresses
Je pense a toi ma déesse
I think of you, my goddess
Où es tu dans ce monde perdu
Where are you in this lost world
Sous quel horizon de flamme de palmier
Under what horizon of palm tree flame
De palais ou de drame
Of palace or drama
As tu caché ton corps parfait
Have you hidden your perfect body
Rien n'est parfait dans ce monde
Nothing is perfect in this world
Seul la soif qui m'inonde
Only the thirst that overwhelms me
Le souvenir de ton sourire
The memory of your smile
Je ne veux pas vivre de souvenir
I don't want to live off memories
Parfait, comme la terre est ronde
Perfect, like the earth is round
Qui t'as arraché du monde
Who tore you away from the world
Au donnes moi de tes nouvelles
Give me your news
Tu me feras la vie plus belle
You will make my life more beautiful
Et je viendrais te chercher
And I will come find you
Ce soir je vais m'endormir encore
Tonight I will fall asleep again
Rêver du parfum de ton corps
Dreaming of the scent of your body
De ton sourire qui disparaît
Of your disappearing smile
Rien n'est parfait dans ce monde
Nothing is perfect in this world
Seul la soif qui m'inonde
Only the thirst that overwhelms me
Au souvenir de ton sourire
To the memory of your smile
Je ne veux pas vivre de souvenir
I don't want to live off memories
Parfait, comme la terre est ronde
Perfect, like the earth is round
Qui t'a arraché du monde
Who tore you away from the world
Au donnes moi de tes nouvelles
Give me your news
Tu me feras la ville plus belle
You will make the city more beautiful
Et je viendrais te chercher
And I will come find you
