D'autres frangins d'autres frangines
The song "L'esprit de famille" by Léo Ferré and Jean Gabin depicts a family that is far from ordinary. Each member has his or her own peculiarity and questionable morality. The lyrics describe a brother who works as an assassin with a blade and makes his wife work after his job, a sister who writes bitter verses in a weekly journal after the murder of a bookseller, a father who runs a bar frequented by shady characters, a sister who spends her days working behind the bar and searching for the perfect rhyme, a mother with an Oedipus complex, a brother and sister-in-law who become involved in a mysterious embassy in Buenos Aires, and other siblings who have a questionable lifestyle.
Despite their unconventional ways, the family is presented as a respectable, tireless, and unified group. The lyrics seem to point out that society often judges and values individuals based on outward appearances rather than on their true character, and that the reality behind each person's life may not always be what it seems. The song can be seen as a commentary on the French society of the time, which was characterized by a desire for order and conformity.
