The band consists of guitarist Gloria Estrada, accordionist and requintero Jose Carlos, bassist Alex Bendana, percussionist Miguel Ramirez, drummer Hugo Vargas and lead vocalist Marisoul, whose captivating voice sings about love, loss and heartbreak. Their influences range from Miles Davis to The Beatles, Zeppelin to Janis Joplin and Mercedes Sosa to Ramon Ayala. Ther common love of music and openness to all genres led them to the concept of La Santa Cecilia in 2007 – named after the patron saint of musicians.
La Santa Cecilia’s self-titled EP was recorded at Lo-Fi Studios in San Bernardino and the legendary Westlake Recording Studios in Hollywood. Their song “Chicle” was featured on the Emmy award-winning series Weeds, the independent feature Dish, and the documentary Re-Encounters about Oaxacan artist Alejandro Santiago. Their musician also be heard on KPFK's radio programs '4 O'clock Tuesday' with Gustavo Arellano and ' Travel Tips For Aztlan' with Mark Torres. The band made an on-camera appearance on HBO's Emmy award-winning hit show Entourage; the episode also featured the songs "Chicle" and "El Farol". The band also held a two- week residence for the L.A. Philharmonic- sponsored children's show Summer Sounds, where they performed their songs and acted so as to educate the community of Los Angeles on their very own cultural treasures.
The band's music has been used in television and movies, such as on the “Weeds” television program and TV series "The Bridge" (1-8).

Por destino soy Americano
Yo soy de la raza de oro
Yo soy México Americano
Yo te comprendo el inglés
Tambien te hablo en castellano
Yo soy de la raza noble
Zacatecas to Minnesota
From Oaxaca to Nueva York
Dos países son mi tierra
Los defiendo con honor
Dos idiomas y dos países
Dos culturas tengo yo
En mi suerte tengo orgullo
Porque así lo manda Díos
Por mi madre yo soy Mexicano
Por destino soy Americano
Yo soy de la raza de oro
Yo soy México Americano
The lyrics to La Santa Cecilia's song "México Americano" eloquently express the duality and complexity of the singer's identity as both Mexican and American. The opening lines, "Por mi madre yo soy Mexicano, Por destino soy Americano," establish the foundation of the singer's identity, acknowledging their Mexican heritage through their mother and their American identity as a result of destiny or circumstances. This recognition of dual heritage sets the stage for the exploration of their cultural background.
The singer then proudly proclaims, "Yo soy de la raza de oro, Yo soy México Americano," which can be interpreted as a celebration of the richness and beauty of their mixed heritage. The use of the term "raza de oro" (race of gold) conveys a sense of pride and reverence for the blending of Mexican and American cultures within the singer. This line serves as a declaration of their unique and valuable identity as a Mexico Americano.
The verses that follow highlight the singer's ability to navigate between the English and Spanish languages, as well as their familiarity and connection to both Mexican and American cultures. The lines, "Yo te comprendo el inglés, También te hablo en castellano," emphasize the bilingualism and cultural versatility of the singer, showcasing their ability to bridge the gap between two worlds. This linguistic and cultural fluidity further reinforces their multifaceted identity as a Mexico Americano.
The closing lines of the song reflect a deep sense of connection and loyalty to both Mexico and America, as the singer declares, "Dos países son mi tierra, Los defiendo con honor." This sentiment encapsulates the singer's profound respect and allegiance to their dual heritage, recognizing both countries as their homeland and vowing to defend them with honor. Overall, "México Americano" serves as a powerful anthem that celebrates the beauty and complexity of multicultural identity, embracing the richness that comes from being both Mexican and American.
