Its founders were Sebastián Teysera (lead vocals, frontman and main songwriter), Nicolás Lieutier (bass guitar) and Santiago Butler (guitar) - all three are still part of the band today. The band's first appearance as La Vela Puerca was in a montevidean street party in December 24, 1995. By then, several new members had already joined in. In 1996, frontman Sebastián Teysera presented a demo tape to a band contest. The rest of the band did not become aware of this until they found out they were one of the twenty finalists. A month later, they recieved a phone call saying they had won, and with this they were given 80 hours of free recording session which would be vital for their debut album.
La Vela Puerca released four albums: Deskarado (1998)(1999 released in Europe as "La Vela Puerca"), De Bichos Y Flores (2001), A Contraluz (2004)and El Impulso (2007).
In Germany they're well-known since they've played with Die Ärzte in Germany and Uruguay. In 2006 they're touring again in Europe.

The lyrics to La Vela Puerca's song A Lo Verde speak of a person who cannot withstand being with their own people for more than four days without smoking. The lyrics suggest that the person has a beautiful life and gets along well with others, but becomes angry when they are told that there is another way to age gracefully. The singer knows this person well and understands that they have strength in their humility, but they are also capable of anything if their truth is challenged.
The song seems to be commenting on the societal pressure to conform to certain expectations, such as aging gracefully or quitting smoking, and the difficulty of going against the norm. The person in the song is comfortable with their lifestyle, but is faced with judgment and criticism from others who don't understand their way of living. Despite this, they are true to themselves and refuse to compromise their values.
The lyrics also suggest that the person has learned important lessons from their experiences in life, and that they know what it takes to soar. The song ends with a message of understanding and support for the person, acknowledging that they are capable of achieving great things.
