In the past, band members dressed in outlandish makeup and costumes, and engaged in intentionally shocking behavior both onstage and off. Their lyrics often received criticism for their anti-religious sentiment and references to sex, violence and drugs, while their live performances were frequently called offensive and obscene. On several occasions, protests and petitions led to the group being blocked from performing, with at least three US states passing legislation banning the group from performing at state-owned venues. They released a number of platinum-selling albums, including Antichrist Superstar (1996) and Mechanical Animals (1998). These albums, along with their highly stylized music videos and worldwide touring, brought public recognition to Marilyn Manson. In 1999, news media, infamously, falsely blamed the band for influencing the perpetrators of the Columbine High School massacre.
As this controversy began to wane throughout the 2000s, so did the band's mainstream popularity. Despite this, Jon Wiederhorn of MTV, in June 2003, referred to Marilyn Manson as "the only true artist today". Marilyn Manson is widely regarded as being one of the most iconic and controversial figures in rock music, with the band and its lead singer influencing numerous other groups and musicians, both in metal-associated acts and also in wider popular culture. VH1 ranked Marilyn Manson as the seventy-eighth best rock band on their 100 Great Artists of Hard Rock. They were inducted into the Kerrang! Hall of Fame in 2000, and have been nominated for four Grammy Awards. In the U.S., the band has seen ten of its releases debut in the top ten, including two number-one albums. Marilyn Manson have sold in excess of 50 million records worldwide.

Hey, hey, hey, hey
You built me up with your wishing hell
I didn't have to sell you
You threw your money in the pissing well
You do just what they tell you
I shed the skin to feed the fake
Repent, that's what I'm talking about
Whose mistake am I, anyway?
Cut the head off
Grows back hard
I am the hydra
Now you'll see your star
Prick your finger, it is done
The moon has now eclipsed the sun
Angel has spread its wings
The time has come for bitter things
Prick your finger, it is done
The moon has now eclipsed the sun
Angel has spread its wings
The time has come for bitter things
Repent (that's what he's talking about)
I shed the skin to feed the fake
Repent (that's what he's talking about)
Whose mistake am I, anyway?
Cut the head off
Grows back hard
I am the hydra
Now you'll see your star
Hey, hey, hey, hey
The time has come, it is quite clear
Our antichrist is almost here
The time has come, it is quite clear
Our antichrist is almost here
The time has come, it is quite clear
Our antichrist is almost here
Cut the head off
Grows back hard
I am the hydra
Now you'll see your star
Hey, hey, hey, hey
When you are suffering know that I have betrayed you
When you are suffering know that I have betrayed you
When you are suffering know that I have betrayed you
When you are suffering know that I have betrayed you
When you are suffering know that I have betrayed you
When you are suffering know that I have betrayed you
When you are suffering know that I have betrayed you
When you are suffering know that I have betrayed you
In Marilyn Manson's Antichrist Superstar, the lyrics critique society's tendency to follow and conform to societal norms that leave individuals with a sense of meaningless and lost identity. The tone of the song is both sarcastic and confrontational, as Manson poses the question "Whose mistake am I anyway?" to criticize the notion of blindly following the crowd. He then goes on to compare himself to a hydra, a mythical creature with many heads which would grow back if one was cut, indicating that he refuses to be silenced or suppressed.
The chorus brings the theme of the antichrist into full focus, as Manson declares "The time has come it is quite clear/Our antichrist/Is almost here." This statement is provocative and somewhat ominous, reflecting the idea that Manson believes he is the symbolic antichrist challenging traditional structures and expectations. The lines "Prick your finger it is done/The moon has now eclipsed the sun/The angel has spread its wings/The time has come for bitter things" further reinforce the disruptive nature of Manson's message, suggesting that a significant change is coming that will bring about pain and discomfort.
