Mia was born in 1947 in Bagnara Calabra (province of Reggio Calabria, southern Italy), but soon she moved to Rome with her sister (Loredana Bertè) and her friend Renato Zero. Both of them would eventually become successful singers too.
She recorded her first records as Mimì Bertè, but she soon decided to change her name to the more appealing Mia Martini.
Her biggest hits were "Piccolo Uomo", which was recorded in several languages, "Almeno tu nell'universo", which is considered her masterpiece and has been covered by several famous Italian singers including Mina and Elisa, and "Minuetto" among many others.
She represented Italy at the Eurovision Song Contest twice: in 1977 with "Libera (song)" (13th out of 18), and in 1992 with "Rapsodia" (4th out of 23).
Her career ended tragically in 1995 when she was found dead under mysterious circumstances in her apartment at Cardano al Campo, near Milan.

La Malattia
Mia Martini Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
l'alba e i suoi colori.
Resto insieme a te,
The lyrics to Mia Martini's song La Malattia are about a person who is struggling with an unspecified illness, and the singer of the song is determined to help them through it. The first verse describes the physical appearance of the person, noting that they look pale and as if they have been through a rough time. Despite this, they still possess some of the same qualities they had before they became ill, including honesty. The singer then talks about their own experience of overcoming a difficult time and how it has given them a newfound sense of clarity and purpose. They offer themselves as a source of support and comfort to the person who is ill, promising to help them in any way they can.
The chorus of the song reinforces this message of support, with the singer comparing themselves to an island that the ill person can rely on. They acknowledge the toll that the illness has taken on the person, and urge them to hold on and keep fighting. The final lines of the song introduce a note of hope, with the singer citing a burning star as a symbol of new beginnings and better times to come.
Overall, La Malattia is a song about the power of human connection and the importance of supporting one another through difficult times. It speaks to the idea that even when we face our darkest moments alone, there is always someone out there who cares and wants to help.
