1) a Canadi… Read Full Bio ↴There are at least four acts that have used the name Moist:
1) a Canadian alternative rock band,
2) a Swedish electronic pop project,
3) an Indonesian shoegaze band, and
4) an Australian industrial duo.
1) Moist is a five-piece Canadian alternative rock band that was popular in the mid-to-late-1990s. The band is led by singer David Usher. Other members of the band are Mark Makoway (guitars), Francis Fillion (drums), Louis Lalancette (bass), Jonathan Gallivan (guitars) and Kevin Young (keyboards). Former members include Jeff Pearce (bass) and Paul Wilcox (drums).
Moist formed in the early 1990s and eventually released an independent cassette in 1993. The cassette caught the attention of EMI, who released their first full-length studio CD, Silver, in 1994. Producer Terry Brown (Rush, Blue Rodeo) was brought in to work on a few of the band's songs, and the album went on to sell 400,000 copies in Canada on the strength of hard-hitting singles like Push, Silver and Believe Me. The follow up, Creature, was released in 1996 to even greater success, with the band's sound maturing and fostering its softer side. A final studio album titled Mercedes 5 and Dime was released in 1999 which was softer and more melancholic than previous releases.
Moist have called off their indefinite hiatus as of September 2013, and released their new single "Mechanical" on May 23rd, 2014.
2) After a life-long love affair with music, songwriter and producer, David Elfström Lilja, began releasing his own music under the name Moist in 2008. In Moist, he began his dream project, in which he writes, produces and play most instruments. His sound can be found on numerous remixes and in collaborations with different vocal artists such as Maria Marcus, Sophie Rimheden and Kana Otsubo. His most recent work with hits like "On And On" and "Release Me" by Agnes, are enjoying heavy rotation on European radio stations. He just finished the single, “Far Beyond The Endless,” with Maria Marcus and writing and producing a track with the Japanese singer and keyboardist, Kana Otsubo, of Spangle Call Lilli Line, which will appear on Moist’s album due at the end 2009, early 2010.

Black Roses
Moist Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
You′re not the only one that feels this violence
Everyone else they feel the weight of every
Thorn through skin so hard
The bleeding starts it comes again
Nothing changes
I will lay black roses down
And I'm not here to save you
Lay your body down
Never could fight
All of the feelings
How they′d laid you open wide
We are undone even the smallest tear
That pulls you from inside
The bleeding starts it comes again
Nothing changes
I will lay black roses down
And I'm not here to save you
I will lay this body
Lay your body down
Damage yourself damage yourself
I will lay black roses down
And I'm not here to save you
I will lay you in the ground
And I′m not here to save you
I will lay your body down
Lay your body down
I will lay your body down
The lyrics of Moist's song "Black Roses" delve into themes of self-destruction, emotional pain, and the inability to escape from the cyclical nature of suffering. The opening lines, "Damage yourself, you're not the only one that feels this violence," suggest that the singer recognizes that their self-inflicted wounds may not be unique, as others also experience similar internal turmoil. The repetition of the phrase "The bleeding starts it comes again, nothing changes" highlights the cyclical nature of this pain, emphasizing the feeling of being trapped in a never-ending cycle of suffering.
The chorus, "I will lay black roses down, and I'm not here to save you, I will lay this body, lay your body down," reveals a sense of resignation and acceptance of the irreversibility of the situation. The imagery of black roses signifies mourning and darkness, and by laying them down, the singer acknowledges their inability to offer salvation or rescue from the pain. The repeated lines "Damage yourself, damage yourself" further emphasize the self-destructive nature of the emotional struggle.
The lyrics also explore the idea of vulnerability and the consequences of exposing one's innermost feelings. The line "Never could fight all of the feelings, how they'd laid you open wide" suggests that allowing oneself to feel deeply can leave one vulnerable to further pain. Even the smallest emotional tear can cause profound damage, pulling the person apart from within.
Overall, "Black Roses" by Moist delves into the painful aspects of emotional suffering, the inability to break free from cyclic patterns, and the recognition of one's own limitations in providing salvation or solace to oneself or others.
