NUMBER GIRL Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to Number Girl's "Sentimental Kanshou" describe a nostalgic and reflective moment in the singer's life as they observe their surroundings in a rainy cityscape. The song opens with a description of a chord (E chord) that continues to race forward, perhaps indicative of the singer's own sense of movement or urgency. The otherwise purple-tinted afternoon is sprinting towards the sunset, which is when the rain starts to fall. The singer's glasses fog up and the many traffic signals in the city blur haphazardly. The song then takes on a slightly more wistful tone as the singer watches a girl in a sailor uniform ride her bike home in the rain, wondering if she is embarrassed by the way she looks. This image is juxtaposed against the singer's own musings about their own "small and petty" existence within their own city. Their thoughts jump back and forth between boredom and awareness of the world around them, ultimately ending up in a red-tinted room that matches their current mood. By the end of the song, the rain has stopped and the city seems to wink at the singer in a way that feels like it's mocking them.

I've been learning Japanese by translating some of my favorite songs, so I attempted to try this one:

The E-chord continues to sprint all the time,
The orchid-colour of evening turning to face the sunset.
Rain begins to drizzle, and my glasses fog up.
Through them, the many streetlights become colorful and start to change.

A schoolgirl riding a bike, covered in rain riding home.
Hands wet and embarrassed, she rides, avoiding the puddles of water with uneasiness.
Is it the end of the school day?

My existential value, and our meaning, what does it mean?
Such an insignificant, trivial thing I cling to.

In that moment of tedium, I notice the rain cease.
The room, dyed with the color of the evening sun.
Without knowing why, I held that feeling close.

Disappearing into the middle of the city,
I see the sentimental landscape all the time.
The freeway after the rain, like laughing at me,
It was glistening, sparkling.

Oh my god, thank you. This feels more reliable that than going to google translate and getting an awkward word salad of lyrics.
I've been learning Japanese too and I'd like to get on this level of being able to translate songs

MilesLargeTV

@numburger Yeah no problem! I don't think my translation is perfect but I really wanted to do it myself rather than trust Google Translate because it is indeed a nonsensical word salad half the time hahaha.

Keiichiro Nagashima

Perfect translation.
