Although Bruel aspired to be a football star as a youth, he decided to pursue singing after seeing Michel Sardou in 1975. His first success came as an actor, however, in 1979's Le Coup de sirocco. He continued acting in films, on television and in the theater while pursuing his singing career. His first single, "Vide" ("Empty"), released in 1982, was not a success, but the follow up, "Marre de cette nana-là" ("Fed up with that chick"), was a hit.
In 2003, he had his last name officially changed to Bruel-Benguigui, his stage name with his birthname, before his partner Amanda Maruani gave birth to his first child, Oscar, on August 19. On September 21, 2004, he wed the 24-year-old Maruani; it is his first marriage. His second child, Léon Bruel was born on the 28th September, 2005.
As of 2004 Bruel has acted in more than 40 different television and film productions and made five studio albums and several live albums. His last album to date is Entre Deux (2002), a double CD of classic chanson that features duets with Charles Aznavour, Jean-Louis Aubert, Jean-Jacques Goldman, Alain Souchon and Renaud, among others. It sold two million copies and made Bruel France's best paid singer of the year. At the beginning of 2005, in response to the South Asian tsunami of December 26, 2004, Bruel wrote the song "Et puis la terre" to benefit the Red Cross.

A Göttingen
Bien sûr nous, nous avons la Seine
Et puis notre bois de Vincennes
Mais Dieu que les roses sont belles
A Göttingen, à Göttingen
Nous, nous avons nos matins blêmes
Et l'âme grise de Verlaine
Eux c'est la mélancolie même
A Göttingen, à Göttingen
A Göttingen, à Göttingen
In the song "Göttingen" by Patrick Bruel, the lyrics express a deep sense of appreciation and admiration for the town of Göttingen. The singer acknowledges that Göttingen may not have iconic landmarks like the Seine river or the Vincennes woods, but still finds beauty in its simplicity and charm. The repetition of the phrase "À Göttingen, à Göttingen" emphasizes the singer's fondness for the town and suggests a sense of contentment and peace that can be found there.
The lyrics contrast the bustling quays and melancholic songs of other cities with the tender blossoming of love in Göttingen. Despite its lack of grandeur, Göttingen is portrayed as a place where love thrives naturally and authentically. This romantic portrayal of the town adds a sense of warmth and intimacy to the song, highlighting the idea that love can flourish in unexpected places.
The song also alludes to the cultural richness and historical knowledge of the people of Göttingen. The mention of names like Herman, Peter, Helga, and Hans suggests a deep connection with German heritage and history. By juxtaposing the history of France with the charm of Göttingen, the lyrics suggest a mutual respect and understanding between different cultures, emphasizing the universality of human experiences and emotions.
The final verses of the song express a poignant plea for peace and unity, emphasizing the common humanity shared by children in both Paris and Göttingen. The lyrics evoke a sense of solidarity and empathy, emphasizing the importance of cherishing love and harmony over conflict and division. The mention of children as symbols of innocence and hope reinforces the message of unity and the desire for a world free from hatred and violence. Overall, "Göttingen" is a heartfelt tribute to a town that represents love, peace, and the universal bond of humanity.

Pas de quais et pas de rengaines
No embankments and no old songs

Eux c'est la mélancolie même
For them, it's melancholy itself
A Göttingen, à Göttingen
In Göttingen, in Göttingen
Quand ils ne savent rien nous dire
When they have nothing to say to us
Ils restent là à nous sourire
They stay there smiling at us
Mais nous les comprenons quand même
But we still understand them
Les enfants blonds de Göttingen
The blonde children of Göttingen
And too bad for those who are surprised
Et que les autres me pardonnent
And may others forgive me
Mais les enfants ce sont les mêmes
But the children are the same
A Paris ou à Göttingen
In Paris or in Göttingen
O faites que jamais ne revienne
Oh never let it come back
The time of blood and hate
Car il y a des gens que j'aime
Because there are people I love
A Göttingen, à Göttingen
In Göttingen, in Göttingen
Et lorsque sonnerait l'alarme
And when the alarm would ring
S'il fallait reprendre les armes
If we had to take up arms again
Mon coeur verserait une larme
My heart would shed a tear
Pour Göttingen, pour Göttingen

Was ich nun sage das klingt freilich
What I am saying may sound harsh
Für manche Leute unverzeihlich
Unforgivable for some people
The children are exactly the same, in Paris as in Göttingen
