The song Rottami by Pierangelo Bertoli is a poignant reflection on the destructive nature of greed and ambition. The lyrics evoke a sense of despair and hopelessness as the singer navigates through a world that values only material success and power, while neglecting the human spirit. The opening lines describe the corrupting influence of ambition, comparing it to a "rampant" production that leaves behind a "squalid" emptiness. The imagery of a "cotechino" (a type of sausage) further emphasizes the notion of something that is churned out mechanically and lacks any real substance or nourishment.
The lyrics go on to describe this soulless pursuit of wealth and power as a "national octopus" and a "viper" that one carries inside oneself without being able to crush it. The sense of powerlessness and submission to this destructive force is palpable in the lines "there is nothing that needs to be said or that can be done to stop it." The singer is trapped on a train that is hurtling forward, unable to look introspectively or change course. The only option is to demolish obstacles in one's way and seek help from a "godfather" with a white collar.
The second half of the song continues in a similarly bleak vein, as the singer reflects on the toll that this lifestyle has taken on his life. He has lost everything, including his health and personal relationships. He is left with nothing but his own regrets and the "useless values" that he has accumulated which, like fish that cannot swim, are of no use to him. The song ends with a bittersweet image of the singer looking out at the sea, contemplating the mistakes he has made and the things he has lost.
