Ryutaro and Tadashi wanted to combine two words to form the band name; something artificial and something natural. After trying a few combinations, they decided on ‘Plastic Tree’. Formerly, there were rumours floating around the web about the band’s name coming from Fake Plastic Trees but this was always disputed due to timing inconsistencies.
In the beginning, Plastic Tree were influenced greatly by The Cure. There was also a large britrock influence. Plastic Tree played a mix of indie rock, punk, and heavier grunge, characterized by Ryutaro’s generic Visual Kei voice and gloomy lyrics. They went through a period where they played more pop-rock and radio-style rock music, although they have recently returned from lighter music to their original roots.
In July 2006, Plastic Tree embarked on their first world tour that took them to Germany, France and Finland.
On the 23rd of February 2009, Sasabuchi Hiroshi left the band and was later replaced by Satou Kenken..

The lyrics to Plastic Tree's MARIA describe the singer's internal struggles and confusion. He feels lost and is running away from a dream he had the night before, although he knows the answer and solution to his confusion. The singer is frustrated with how conventional society is, and he rejects the idea of blindly following others without free thought. He believes that only the ignorant choose to follow such a path in life.
The singer then references a fairy tale he was told in his childhood where he imagined a reality where someone named Maria existed and he asks her to help him, who he sees as his savior. He asks Maria to help him understand the purpose and meaning of his life, which he compares to walking on tightrope without knowing where the end is. In the second verse, the singer explores the idea of forgetting, saying that adults forget their memories too quickly and swap them out for simplistic and bland words. The singer also believes that mixing and assimilating into society is not the answer for him, and he feels uncomfortable in that situation. Finally, he recalls a conversation he had where someone else was complaining about how difficult it was to go the long way, which he knows is not an option for him.
