A Cross of Flowers
Rome Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Ich versinke im Eis von Kronstadt
Ich liege unter dem Pflaster von Paris
Ich klebe an den Mauern Warschaus
Ich steh' versteinert in Berlin
Ich liege in den Straßen Barcelonas
Ich falle im Kugelhagel der weißen Garden
Ich liege im Schnee Petrograds
Lieg' verscharrt in den Wäldern Perus
Ich verblute in Spaniens Sand
Ich liege in der ukrainischen Steppe
Ich friere in Sibirien
Aufgerieben zwischen Hammer und Kreuz
Ich rette mich übers Meer
Und mich fröstelt es auch dort
Man schickt mich zurück
Man schickt mich fort
Man verbannt mich
Man tröstet sich mit Sicherheit
Über mich hinweg
Ich liege im Hafen von Odessa
Liege garrotiert in Leon
Zerfleischt von den Bluthunden
Der neuen Ordnung
Ich fließe aus aufgebissener Gurgel
Ich bin der Schrei

Der aus der Steppe aufsteigt
Der vom Meer herüberweht

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Rome's song "A Cross of Flowers" are a poetic and poignant depiction of the many struggles and conflicts that have occurred throughout history. Through the use of vivid imagery, the song portrays individuals who have been affected by war, oppression, and violence, who are left lying in the streets of various cities around the world, freezing in Siberia or bleeding in the sand of Spain. The singer is the collective voice of these victims, who are both physically and emotionally scarred by their experiences.

The repeated phrase "man schickt mich" ("they send me") conveys a sense of helplessness and despair, as the singer is moved from place to place, banished or relegated to oblivion. The final lines of the song tie together the themes of displacement and struggle, as the singer describes himself as the voice that rises from the steppe and echoes over the sea, a testament to the profound impact that these experiences have had on him.

Overall, "A Cross of Flowers" is a haunting and thought-provoking song that forces listeners to confront the human toll of history's conflicts and reminds us of the importance of compassion and empathy.

Alesia

[Verse 1]
My brothers in arms
Swords of the legion
Light of my eye
There is no end in sight
Our nation's twisting like prey
And the blood of the ebbing day
Behind these walls of Alesia
Let's pray

[Chorus]
Nothing's ever over
There is no closure
No fulfillment nor relief
You'll have to trust me on this
There is no closure
Nothing's ever over
There's no end to history
You'll see

[Verse 2]
We sleepy anywhere
Shall come home some day
To find it all saved
By sheer luck we'll say
It was by hearts that never quavered
Will that never wavered
We will kneel and feel
Their blade

[Chorus]
Nothing's ever over
There is no closure
No fulfillment, no relief
You'll have to trust me on this
There is no closure
Nothing's ever over
There's no end to history
You'll see
Nothing's ever over
There is no closure
No fulfillment, no relief
You'll have to trust me on this
There is no closure
Nothing's ever over
There's no end to history
You'll see

A fascinating album. Not surprising; most, if not all, of the music ROME makes is fantastic. Beautiful tales of ambiguity, perfectly human in its emotion, yet somewhat transcendent in the way all myths and stories are. No single message; multiple interpretations created, leading to the kernels of wisdom.

@emyrgrznsky 99 fascism demands collectivism and for everything to be political. Rome makes music about amazing human accomplishments and failures with few mentions of such things. It it a liberal ideology with hints of European exceptionalism.
